A superstar player in a position that Chelsea want and need would like a move to the Premier League this summer, which could open some doors for the club
It promises to be a huge summer transfer window ahead for Chelsea as they enter the Xabi Alonso era and try to put the disastrous 25/26 season in the past.
Over the past week or so, it has been reported that the three positions the Blues are prioritising this summer are centre half, central midfielder and left wing.
Well, in terms of the latter, a market opportunity could have stumbled on Chelsea's lap. Indeed, as in recent weeks, AC Milan left winger Rafael Leao stated that he is ready to leave the Italian giants after seven years at the club, and would like to move abroad.
There has been a further development in that regard, with high profile journalist Fabrizio Romano stating that the winger sees the Premier League as "the absolute dream move and the "aboslute ideal destination."
Quite a while back, Chelsea had been linked with Leao, though that has gone quiet of late. Nevertheless, with the club in for a player in that position, could we see them try this summer?
There is no doubt that the Portuguese international is a very talented player. He is a lightning quick and very physical player, with excellent ball carrying and dribbling ability.
He is also a creative player, capable of crossing the ball into dangerous areas with very little backlift. At his best he can be an absolutely devastating player to watch and play against.
However, those games can be very few and far between. In Serie A last season, he scored nine goals. Not a terrible return, but he did not score a goal after the 1st of March. Milan were playing one game a week nearly all season, so that was his last goal of any kind.
Poor end of season form meant that they went from having been in second placed for most of the season to finishing outside of the top four all together, and missing out on UEFA Champions League football next season.
The form, or lack there of, from Leao in this period has been mentioned as a big reason for the disastrous end to the season. A lot has been made of his unwillingness to track back and help out defensively. Not sure Alonso would stand for that. It was clearly part of what eventually went wrong for him during his short time at Real Madrid.
Still, it would be interesting to see Leao in the Premier League, and potentially at Chelsea.
