When addressing the media on Monday, the 13th of July 2026, Xabi Alonso officially confirmed that a Chelsea first team player will depart the club.
Despite the excitement regarding this summer's FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, a lot of Chelsea fans cannot wait for the new era under Xabi Alonso to get going.
There is a lot of anticipation over the rebuild that will happen under Alonso, with hope that he will be allowed to bring in his own players, and be able to get rid of unwanted players.
Well, we now know one player in particular who is set to depart SW6 this summer. Indeed so, as Alonso himself has today (the 13th of July) confirmed that winger Alejandro Garnacho will leave the club this summer.
The manager said: "The situation is we've spoken with the sporting directors. There's interest in him [Garnacho] from other clubs. It hopefully finishes in the best way for everyone."
Well, there you go. Very honest and transparent from Alonso, which is refreshing to see. As he says, hopefully this will finish in the best way possible all round. Let's hope it can be sorted as quickly as possible.
It was reported the other day that there are clubs in the Premier League, Serie A and Saudi Pro League interested in Garnacho, so you remain hopeful that this amount of interest means someone will have signed him sooner rather than later.
Having a player who does not want to be at Chelsea still at the club is not beneficial to anyone, and the sooner the money for him comes in, the sooner it can be reinvested back into the squad to help allow Alonso to get the players that he wants.
All of that being said, it is once again another utter failure of a transfer under the current ownership. Garnacho was only signed from Manchester United last August, and it is already time to move him on. The 22-year old played 24 Premier League games last season, scoring just once.
To make it even funnier, he was given a seven year contract at Stamford Bridge. Just one year into that seven year deal, he is being shipped out. What a circus in every sense of the word. Best to just get this done and ultimately, pretend it never happened. And given how forgettable his year in West London was, that shouldn't be too hard.
With Andrey Santos' move to Manchester United confirmed earlier today, the rebuild is really beginning to get going. Keep it up.
