With Anan Khalaili set to sign for Crystal Palace and Óscar Mingueza already through the door, the future of Colombian star Daniel Muñoz is unclear. Palace now have three players competing for the same position, and interest is starting to mount in Muñoz with three weeks remaining of the window.

Numerous reports have arisen linking him with a move away from South London, with Alan Nixon breaking the news that Everton are interested in securing Muñoz’s services ahead of the new season. The general understanding is that if Palace are to put him in the window for a move there will be intense interest from across the footballing world.

Why Palace are open to losing Muñoz

Despite how excellent Muñoz has been for Palace in the 2 ½ years since he joined, the club have secured his long-term replacement in Khalaili, and with Mingueza already in as a rotation option, there is no better time for the club to cash.

Our understanding ahead of the links to Everton was that Palace were keen for Saudi money to push the price up, with Italian side Inter Milan also interested in the deal. If Palace make Muñoz available, the list of potential suitors will likely grow, which could result in a bidding war that could see Palace make a tidy profit.

Despite his importance to the side under Oliver Glasner, Pierre Sage’s system focuses less intensely on the right hand side, where the Austrian utilised Muñoz’s ability and relied on it at times to create chances.

The reality of the situation as things stand is that Muñoz is 30-years-old, and whilst he managed to put in another relentless season last year, there were some slight injury issues, and his playing style heavily relies on constant running.

With two years remaining on his current deal, with Palace holding the option of a further year, the club would be in a very strong position when it comes to negotiating a fee.

Muñoz will likely go down as one of the greatest value signings in Palace’s history, if not in the entire Premier League. The £10 million outlay that Palace had to pay to sign him from Genk looks a steal in hindsight.

Cashing in now would also allow Palace to invest again in the market this summer, with multiple positions still required to allow the club to compete as best they can in the new season. Evann Guessand looks set to rejoin the club on loan, which we revealed exclusively as talks are at an advanced stage, but another central midfielder and starting quality central defender are still needed.

If Palace can receive a fee over £30 million, it would allow for the club to go back into the market and really attack some of the options that have previously been deemed too expensive.

Where should Muñoz go?

Selling to a Premier League rival, especially one that isn't in the Champions League would be a strange move to make. Muñoz is capable of playing in Europe's top competition, and when a side like Inter Milan are interested Everton will have a tough task on their hands if they were to convince Muñoz to sign.

Directly strengthening a side who will likely be competing in the same area of the table as Palace feels a strange move, as it does for Muñoz too, who after impressing in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons has earned himself the right to move to a top European club.

Ultimately, his potential new club will be decided by a combination of player and club. Palace may favour a sale to Saudi Arabia in an attempt to finally see the fruits of that league's wealth, but Muñoz may want to stay in England, or more likely step up to a Champions League club elsewhere in Europe.

The modern game favours players like Muñoz, and there will be a plethora of clubs interested in his signature. Alternatively, Palace may opt to keep hold of him, but that could halter the development of the incoming Khalaili.

This is certainly one to watch over the next few weeks.
