Leeds United Women winger Drew Greene insists “every week is the next biggest game” as the Whites prepare to face second-placed AFC Fylde, with their perfect start to the FA WNL Division One North season on the line.
Leeds United Women are preparing for a significant test on Sunday afternoon as they travel to Kellamergh Park to face second-placed AFC Fylde in the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
Simon Wood’s side have made an outstanding start to the campaign, winning all 10 of their league fixtures to establish themselves at the top of the table.
However, with Fylde having dropped points just once this season, the Whites face a stern examination of their title credentials against one of their closest challengers.
Ahead of the meeting, Leeds winger Drew Greene spoke to the club’s official website, explaining the squad’s approach to preparation and the importance of maintaining their standards regardless of the opposition.
“We are really looking forward to the game on Sunday,” Greene began. “Every week we prepare in training for our opponents and look at the areas we did well previously, as well as where we can improve.
“Every week is the next biggest game, no matter who it’s against.
“Beating anyone we come up against contributes to where we want to be at the end of the season. This is now the next biggest game we have, and after that, it will be next week.”
The winger’s comments reflect the mentality that has helped Leeds maintain their perfect league record through the opening weeks of the season, with the squad focused on taking each fixture as it comes rather than looking too far ahead.
Sunday’s encounter nevertheless represents an important opportunity to strengthen their position at the summit, with a victory potentially opening up further breathing room over a Fylde side that has also enjoyed an impressive start following promotion last season.
Greene acknowledged the quality of the opposition but stressed that the objective remains unchanged as Leeds look to extend their winning run.
“Fylde are a strong team who have started well this season, so we know it’s going to be a tough battle, but coming away with three points is the main aim for this game and the rest.”
The Whites travel to Lancashire having continued their excellent form last weekend, when they recorded a 2-0 victory over Norton & Stockton Ancients at the BD Community Stadium.
Amy Woodruff opened the scoring after 13 minutes before Drew Greene doubled the advantage, finishing off a superb team move following an impressive run down the left flank from her twin sister, Darcie.
That result made it 10 league victories from 10 for Wood’s side, who have also progressed in the Women’s FA Cup and enjoyed success in the FA WNL Cup during an impressive opening period.
Maintaining that momentum will be crucial against Fylde, who have demonstrated their ability to compete consistently in the division and will be eager to inflict a first league defeat of the campaign on the leaders.
Greene believes the strength of the squad has been central to their early-season success, highlighting the quality within the group and the collective determination to continue delivering results.
“We have started the season really well and really want to keep it going for as long as possible,” the winger added.
“We have a really good group and lots of quality, which is really helping us maintain momentum, as we all have the same goal.
“Sunday is going to be a tough challenge and a big game, which we are all prepared for.”
With both sides occupying the top two positions in the division, the meeting offers Leeds an opportunity to deliver another statement performance as they pursue their ambitions for the season.
A victory would extend their league winning streak to 11 matches and further underline the progress made under Wood, although the Whites will need to be at their best against a Fylde side determined to challenge their position at the summit.
Kick-off at Kellamergh Park is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday.
