Florian Wirtz has reflected on his disappointing first season at Liverpool, shared his early impressions of new head coach Andoni Iraola and reacted to Jürgen Klopp's appointment as Germany manager after returning to the Reds' pre-season camp.
Will Florian Wirtz Get More G/A than last campaign in the new season?
Yes
0%No
0%Florian Wirtz has recently rejoined the Liverpool squad following a holiday after his World Cup dreams ended early at the hands of Paraguay in the Round of 32.
And since he has been back with the first team squad over in the United States, he has been speaking to the media about his first season in Red, his conversations with new manager Andoni Iraola and his thoughts on Germany appointing former LFC Legendary Manager Jurgen Klopp.
Wirtz On His Debut Season For Liverpool
Florian Wirtz arrived at Liverpool with expectations sky-high following the completion of a deal that cost the club a potential £116 million, if all the add-ons are met, with many believing that Liverpool had just got their hands on one of Europe's brightest stars.
So it was clear that LFC believed in Wirtz as a player for now and the future, but how did he do in his first season?
Reuters/John E SokolowskiWell, he had a very up-and-down season, going through phases of being in form and out of form, which probably wasn't helped by the overall inconsistency of Liverpool last season under Arne Slot. The German playmaker would end up registering seven goals and eight assists across 49 games in all competitions.
This was undoubtedly an underwhelming season for Florian Wirtz and not befitting of the fee Liverpool paid for him, nor the calibre of player that he can be.
Reuters/John E SokolowskiAnd this was something Wirtz admitted himself, while also making clear his excitement going into his second year at Anfield:
"Yeah, of course I wasn't happy at all – about the season, I mean. I was not unhappy every day when I came to training, but I think we expected much more last season. I think we start from zero this season. Also, here with this training camp, it’s a new start. We have a lot of things to do better this season, and I’m very excited for season two.”
There were flashes of brilliance when Wirtz picked up the ball last season, but he struggled with the intensity and physicality of the Premier League, especially in the first half of the season, which will be something that both Andoni Iraola and Florian Wirtz will be hoping to solve going into the new campaign.
REUTERS/Phil NobleLiverpool fans will be hoping that, much like Florian Wirtz himself, season two will be better than season one, and they can start to see why Liverpool paid such a high price for the attacking midfielder.
Wirtz On New Manager Andoni Iraola and Playing In A Central Attacking Role
As previously mentioned, Florian Wirtz never really got going and showed his full ability last season under Arne Slot, but he will be hoping that with a change in the dugout over the summer break, he can come back and have more of an impact on the pitch under new manager Andoni Iraola.
Wirtz was asked about Iraola and what he made of the Spaniard's comments regarding where he sees Wirtz in his team.
“I just can say that the training is really fun, I enjoyed every training [session] until now. We play a lot of games and possessions, and that’s exactly what I like. I just enjoyed it until now.”"I was always more like a No.10. But I play where the manager puts me. We’ve spoken about that as well. Let’s see what happens this season.”
Wirtz On Former Reds Boss Jürgen Klopp Becoming German National Team Manager
Wirtz has also been quizzed on his opinions on the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as his new National Team Manager, following the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann.
“It’s very, very cool that he’s there now. I’ve not spoken to him yet but a lot of people here at the club told me about him, that he is a fantastic guy. All of Liverpool loves him. So, I’m very excited to meet him in a few months.”
This shows just how highly thought of Jürgen Klopp is not just within Liverpool, but also within his home country of Germany.
REUTERS/Agustin MarcarianWirtz, who has never worked with Jürgen Klopp before, clearly can't wait to meet and begin work with the legendary Reds boss when he goes off to international duty in September, with Klopp likely to have Wirtz at the centre of his plans going forward with the national team
And based on what Wirtz has been saying, he is determined to go into that international break in top form for Liverpool, take his game to the next level and prove to Andoni Iraola that he can be the main man for his LFC team next season.
