Andoni Iraola spoke to the media this afternoon ahead of Liverpool's trip to South London to take on Crystal Palace. Here is everything the Basque boss had to say ahead of this Premier League game.

A return to league action for Liverpool as they take on Crystal Palace in their final game before this November international break

The two sides go into this game off the back of disappointing showings last time out, meaning a win for either side would be a huge boost going into the two-week absence of club football.

Andoni Iraola has been speaking about facing Crystal Palace, recent criticism of Bradley Barcola and more.

In the last press conference before Fenerbahce, Iraola confirmed he had yet to receive an explanation for why the Reds weren't given a penalty against Arsenal when Alexander Isak had his shirt pulled in the box.

And when asked again about it today, the Basque boss confirmed he has yet to hear from Pro Ref:

“No, we've had no explanation but this is how it works. It's the conclusion of the panel. We have to wait 10 days I think before they give what they think. No news.”

Andoni Iraola on Expectations

Before the last league defeat, many were discussing Liverpool as the most likely challengers to the Gunners' title defence, but after that loss, the tune has changed, and now people are concerned about whether LFC will finish in the top five.

But Iraola believes these alternating expectations are normal, and he is focused on bouncing back against Crystal Palace:

“I think it's the challenge at LFC, when we speak, everything is on a run, in a good place, a better mood. Two defeats the mood changes and it has to change.

“We have to react now to two defeats, Palace away. I remember Bournemouth, Brentford... we have to go there and do the job and win the game.”

Andoni Iraola on Bradley Barcola as a Striker

One of the main takeaways from the Fenerbahce loss midweek was the poor performance of big-money signing Bradley Barcola.

The Frenchman naturally plays as a winger but was used as a striker for his former club, PSG, at times, and this was something Iraola tried during the week.

But it would be fair to say it didn't work, and the Reds' head coach explained that Barcola will continue to be used, in the main, as a winger:

“Bradley is a winger but I wanted to try it. I thought he could be a threat in behind with their centre-backs but mainly he is a winger with us. Sometimes I want to try it. I tried Cody Gakpo in the Carabao Cup. It's something we can use when Alexander Isak is tired.”

Andoni Iraola on Rio Ngumoha's England Call-Up

Some good news announced this morning was Rio Ngumoha receiving another call-up to the Three Lions' Nations League squad, with Iraola pleased for the 18-year-old:

“Good news for him. It's good for him and us. He is growing and helping us a lot.”

Andoni Iraola on Alexander Isak

The Swedish striker sits second in the Premier League Golden Boot race, and has looked a lot closer to the £125 million goalscorer that the club signed last summer.

Iraola explained that he sees Isak as a "top goalscorer" and he wants to use the forward in the best way possible:

“Alex is a top goalscorer. You put him in the positions, he will deliver- the closest thing of a guarantee, no? He can add more things like every player, but we want to use everything he has. We are trying to use him in the best way.”

This weekend's opposition, and despite the summer of change in the dugout at Selhurst Park, the style of play and system are very similar to last campaign.

Iraola is fully aware of the danger Pierre Sage's team pose to Liverpool in this game:

“They changed the manager, but there is continuity; I see what they are trying to do. They fight until the end and managed to get a result with 10 players. They have quality players, technically: Kamada, Wharton... players who can play.

“They are good on the ball, but it's a pitch that isn't the biggest, so you are under pressure with throws, long balls. There is a lot of situations you have to be good defensively, offensively.”

Andoni Iraola on Ryan Gravenberch

The only player on the current injury list who is close to a return is Ryan Gravenberch. He was an unused substitute against Arsenal and didn't travel to Turkey due to a heel issue.

Iraola has confirmed that Gravenberch could be involved against Crystal Palace, but it's a situation they are monitoring day-by-day:

“Ryan is a day to day thing and a matter of pain. Let's see if he can deal with the pain and help us.”

Andoni Iraola on Defensive Issues

Liverpool have looked strong defensively in the Premier League, conceding nine goals in nine games.

But in the Champions League, the Reds have conceded 10 goals in just four games, something that has been concerning fans ahead of this game:

“I agree; it's true three goals come from set pieces, but especially in the CL. In the PL, we have been good defensively, but in CL we concede goals v Villarreal, LASK; there are signs we have to see, we concede three more now. Set-plays, different situations.

“A ball can never go through the wall, second goal we can defend better, third is a difficult one. We don't deal with the header, but first two were cheap. We have to control the game and arrive well, so to concede was cheap and punished us.”

Andoni Iraola on Attacking Better

On the flip side of that, Liverpool have looked a lot better going forward when playing in Europe compared to the Premier League.

This is something that has confused Iraola as well, with him believing that his side needs to control games better in order to create more chances:

“I think it's been a strange season. CL: we score and concede a lot; not the same in PL. That is the challenge we have. It's a matter of controlling the games, but also, sometimes, we control too much.

“We are in possession and having good positions, but sometimes we have to go in the box with more players. We lose control, yes, but it gives us more threat. Against Arsenal, the way we attack the box has to be better.”

Andoni Iraola on the Mood around the Club

After back-to-back losses, the mood around the club would inevitably be one of disappointment and anger, something that Iraola has confirmed, as he and the squad are determined to correct things this weekend:

“It's not easy at this moment; when we lose, everyone is angry. But we have to have some perspective. We will have ups and downs; we will get through this moment, we will have some good results. We lost two, and now there are doubts, but we have to understand it is normal.

“The ones here who work every day: we are not as bad as we look today or as good as we look one week ago; this is the perspective and the challenge for the group. We need to correct things.”

Andoni Iraola on Giving Away Fouls

Am I being refereed fairly? We are quite an honest group. Sometimes too honest. Even the other day, the ref congratulated us a lot. I don't know if I liked it or not but he said the behaviour was good. In general, we have complaints - a penalty, a yellow card, whatever. But I feel we are a team that wants to press and be intense.”

The Reds boss finally went into detail on how he believes his sides have attacking strength in certain phases of the play, but admitted it's far easier to start a game well, take a lead and adapt from there rather than constantly chasing it:

“We are one of the teams that arrives more in the final third, shots and crosses but we are, analysing the quality of every chance, it is quite low. Especially when we start losing games, the quality around is always lower but we have to do more with the number of times we arrive in their box.

“We have to better. Sometimes you can lose some control but we have to arrive there more. For me, everything is easier when you start winning games, you're ahead, you can use the spaces and attack. We had one possession after the first goal on Wednesday, so we had no advantage to play with the goal advantage.”
