Fresh reports indicate Liverpool aren’t currently pursuing a move for RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida, despite their previous interest in the Dutch international.
Lutshsrel Geertruida’s name has frequently appeared in Liverpool transfer discussions over the past year, hampered more by his consistent displays out on loan for a Sunderland side embarking on a European journey in their first season back in the Premier League.
However, recent reports suggest the Reds aren’t currently in contact with the versatile defender, despite genuine interest existing.
As things stand, there’s no contact whatsoever between Liverpool and Geertruida.
This update clarifies a player often linked with a move to Anfield due to his versatility and connections with familiar figures to Liverpool supporters.
A Close Call
What’s particularly interesting is the revelation that Liverpool’s interest was more advanced than many realised.
Reports suggest former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was keen to bring Geertruida to Anfield during the winter transfer window.
Geertruida’s ability to play right-back, centre-back and even in midfield made him an attractive option for a squad facing depth and flexibility concerns.
It’s also claimed personal terms were effectively agreed.
However, despite this progress, Liverpool ultimately decided against completing the transfer.
The reasons behind this decision remain unclear, but it seems the club chose against finalising the move despite significant groundwork.
Why Geertruida Was Appealing
The Dutch international has earned a strong reputation across Europe for his tactical intelligence and versatility.
Having worked under Slot at Feyenoord, he became a trusted player within the manager’s system.
His ability to play in multiple positions would have provided Liverpool with valuable depth in defence.
His versatility remains a key strength.
Focus Shifts
Currently, Geertruida’s focus is reportedly on international duty and the upcoming World Cup. Any future discussions are expected later.
Meanwhile, Liverpool seem to be heading in a different direction.
Since Ibrahima Konaté’s departure, the Reds have been linked with several defensive options including Nico Schlotterbeck Gonçalo Inácio and Maxime Estève as they assess how to strengthen their back line.
However, the latest update suggests Geertruida is no longer a priority.
One Rumour Put To Bed
Transfer windows often spark speculation but not all stories end with a signing.
In Geertruida’s case, the interest seems genuine. A move was discussed and personal terms were reportedly in place. However Liverpool ultimately decided not to proceed. Based on the latest reports, it’s unlikely that will change anytime soon.
