Virgil van Dijk has revealed he has already shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s next vice-captain as the Reds weigh up who will succeed Andy Robertson in the leadership group.

Liverpool are considering four senior players to fill the vacant vice-captaincy following Andy Robertson’s departure earlier this summer.

James Pearce of The Athletic reports that Alisson Becker, Dominik Szoboszlai, Joe Gomez and Alexis Mac Allister are all being considered, with a decision expected to me made before the start of the new Premier League campaign

The role became vacant when Robertson called time on his long tenure at Anfield, leaving Liverpool to appoint a new deputy to  lead behind Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has confirmed he’s already given his opinion on the new vice-captain, as when he was quizzed about the decision, the Liverpool skipper said, “The new vice-captain? I definitely have my opinion and I always share it.”

Four experienced contenders

Each of the four reported candidates brings unique qualities to Liverpool’s leadership group.

Alisson, one of the club’s longest-serving senior players, has become a world-class goalkeeper during his time at Anfield, and with being alongside Van Dijk for his entire Liverpool tenure, the role fits the Brazilian.

His calm authority and experience have earned him respect within the dressing room, with the only stumbling block his future at the club for the foreseeable future.

Szoboszlai, who arrived from RB Leipzig, has quickly become one of Liverpool’s most influential players. Despite being only 25, the Hungary captain has consistently demonstrated leadership both for club and country.

Joe Gomez commands immense respect within the club. Having spent over a decade at Liverpool, the defender has witnessed every major success during the club’s modern era and remains a senior voice in the squad.

Mac Allister has also become increasingly influential since joining Liverpool. His composure, consistency and World Cup winning experience make him another strong contender.

Leadership transition

Replacing Robertson goes beyond simply handing over the captain’s armband when Van Dijk is unavailable.

The vice-captain plays a crucial role in Liverpool’s leadership group. He sets standards both on and off the pitch and serves as a vital link between the dressing room and coaching staff.

With Andoni Iraola starting his first full season in charge, establishing a strong leadership structure will be a key part of the club’s preparations.

Author’s View: Decision still to come

Liverpool has yet to announce Robertson’s successor but Van Dijk’s comments suggest discussions are already underway.

Whoever is chosen will join one of the Premier League’s most respected leadership groups and take on significant responsibility during what promises to be a crucial new chapter at Anfield.

With four highly respected candidates under consideration, Liverpool is unlikely to be short of leadership regardless of the final decision.
