Liverpool's search for attacking reinforcements may have dominated the summer transfer window, but fresh reports suggest the Reds are now stepping up their pursuit of defensive additions.

It would appear as though there is potential for Liverpool to make further additions to the squad after signing one or two winger options this summer.

With the amount of focus that the Reds had been putting into signing a top-level right winger this summer, it appeared that this was Liverpool's only target area this summer, despite a number of glaringly obvious holes within Andoni Iraola's squad.

The main cause for concern is in the defence, where not only does LFC have a shortage of centre-backs but also of right-backs.

Currently, Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are both out injured at the moment, and both also have recurring issues when it comes to injuries, meaning they aren't able to be relied upon by Liverpool.

As much as the likes of Jeremie Frimpong and Calvin Ramsay are fit and available to play that position, Frimpong has hardly set the world alight with his performances last season and so far in pre-season, and he has his own fitness concerns.

Then Calvin Ramsay is yet to be given any sort of trust by any manager at Liverpool since his arrival in 2022, and putting him straight into the starting eleven for Liverpool would be a huge risk.

That is why the general consensus is that Liverpool needs to bring in either a right-back and centre-back, or someone who is capable of playing in both positions and at a good enough level.

And it would now appear, if reports are to be believed, that the club may finally be coming around to the same idea.

Liverpool Monitoring Defensive Options

It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that centre-back is an area to keep an eye on when it comes to Liverpool and transfers going into the final few weeks of the window.

This has since been followed up on by Paul Joyce, who has stated that it is likely that Liverpool hope to find a solution to the ongoing issues in the defence with one player, with the likelihood being the club signs someone who can play both right back and centre back, but who that will be remains a mystery at the moment.

And finally, Ben Jacobs has claimed that Liverpool are assessing multiple different positions on top of the ongoing pursuit of a winger, with midfield, right back, and centre-half all being considered, and he believes that the club is going to be active in the closing weeks of this summer transfer window.

Who Has Been Linked With A Move To Anfield?

So, this is all positive news for LFC fans, but it will still be concerning that not only have we not identified who we want to bring in, but the club is going to push forward with these plans late in the window.

This means there is little room for error because the last thing Liverpool wants is a repeat of the Marc Guehi saga from last summer after that move fell through on Deadline Day.

The Reds have been linked to a few different profiles of players this summer in defence, one being Fikayo Tomori.

The English defender currently plays for AC Milan and would be open to a departure from the San Siro this summer, and with his contract in Italy set to expire next summer, AC Milan may wish to cash in.

Another defender linked with a summer switch to Merseyside is Ezri Konsa. The England international has played a starring role for club and country, leading Aston Villa to a Europa League win and England to a 3rd-place finish in the World Cup.

He is also Premier League-proven, entering the peak years of his career at age 28, and has the ability to play both right-sided centre-back and right-back, which is exactly what LFC needs.

But the question still remains: will Liverpool push ahead for a defensive signing this summer, and if so, how late in the window will they look to get a deal done?
