Liverpool Eye Summer Move for AC Milan Star Fikayo Tomori

LFC have had issues at centre back for many years, with the number of centre backs at the club always either being not enough or just enough.

This was highlighted in the 2020/21 season when Jürgen Klopp had to field players like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, and even had Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as his centre-back pairing at one point, due to injuries. 

So it was from this point forward that fans believed that the club would never risk a situation like that ever again.

Liverpool would go on to sign Ibrahima Konate in the summer of 2021, meaning the club now had just enough centre-backs at the club, with Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate. 

However, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were always players that fans knew would pick up injuries throughout the season, meaning in reality the club only had two defenders they could fully rely on in Van Dijk and Konate. 

This has led to Virgil playing a large number of games for Liverpool since he joined the club, and now that he is 35 years old, there is a worry that he is not going to be able to do this for much longer.

On top of that, his defensive partner Ibrahima Konate departed LFC this summer. While yes, Liverpool have recruited both Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, both are young, inexperienced, and coming off serious long-term injuries.

So it has been thought that Liverpool would look to strengthen in this area, and that desire for defensive reinforcements has only grown since Andoni Iraola confirmed that Joe Gomez will be out with an injury, picked up in the Reds' first pre-season game, until after the opening game of the new season. 

Furthermore, with Van Dijk only just starting pre-season training this week, it means LFC's options in defence are threadbare, and the need for additions needs to be a high priority, which is why Liverpool have been linked today with a move for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori. 

Fikayo Tomori is a defender who has been flying under the radar for many years since his move to Italy to play for AC Milan back in the summer of 2021.

The England international has been a consistent figure within the AC Milan team, and despite a few up-and-down years for AC Milan as a club, Tomori has been one of the few constants within the side.

However, he has now been linked with a summer exit from Italy as the 28-year-old is set to hit his peak years in football and is interested in a new challenge away from AC Milan. 

According to Massimo Pavan, an Italian Journalist, Liverpool have made initial contact with the Italian giants this summer, as they are exploring the finances involved in getting a deal over the line for Tomori.

Tomori is said to have rejected newly promoted side Coventry City and has had fellow Serie A side Juventus enquire about him.

Additionally, Fikayo Tomori is set to be out of contract in 2027; therefore, if AC Milan want to get any money for the defender that they paid €35 million (£29.9 million)for, this summer is their final opportunity.

Should he move to LFC, he would offer the experience and high-level ability that the Liverpool backline needs at the moment, allowing Iraola to drop Jacquet and Leoni in when he deems the time is right, rather than putting them into the team too early.
