The turnaround in Ibrahima Konaté's contract negotiations has taken many by surprise, but was it as much of a surprise internally as it was to the public?

Arne Slot’s side’s disappointing end to the season, despite finishing fifth and securing Champions League football, slowed down the contract negotiations. It also led to disagreements over choices and finances that would be allocated.

L'Equipe reported that there were internal disagreements and that now, it was the club that chose to back away from contract negotiations with the French defender.

Liverpool's turbulent season has had no shortage of negative situations, with injuries, bad results, an an unhappy atmosphere. Now, whether it's a good decision or not, they decided to lose Ibrahima Konaté on a free.

L'Equipe also reported that while the contract negotiations have been at a stalemate for a long time, other European clubs that have been keeping an eye on Konaté have begun concrete negotiations with him. Clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Bayern are the main ones who have looked at him as someone who can boost their defensive ranks, and we can't rule out PSG, who have been linked with him in the past.

Konaté has spoken about his love for his home city. Back in 2023 while on International duty, he told RMC, "I'm not going to answer about what they do! But no, it's true that I'm a Parisian, but I'm at Liverpool."

After Liverpool's 1-1 Draw against Luton, he was asked if he imagined himself playing for PSG one day. He told Canal Plus, "If I said no, I'd be lying, but if you're asking, is it one of my objectives? Not at all."

With his departure, Liverpool will have Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, a returning Giovanni Leoni, and a new arrival in Jeremy Jacquet; otherwise, they remain short on center-backs. The Club will have a decision to make on whether or not they act decisively in this upcoming window and sign another center-back.

Players like Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund have been mentioned as possible signings, although they did pass up the chance to bring back Jarrel Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen. The next move for Ibrahima Konaté and for Liverpool football club is uncertain, but it is in the best interest for both parties to find their own solution, now that his departure is all but confirmed

Author's Take:

It's quite sad to see him leave. At his best, there were not many centre-backs that were better; his performance against Real Madrid in the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final comes to mind. He spent 5 years at the club, winning a Premier League and multiple domestic cups, and yes, this season was a disaster, but almost all the players were below par this season, and I had hope that we would go into next season with a solid group of old and new, ready to go again.

With him leaving, because the club had internal disagreements, being in talks with him for over a year minimum, on top of everything that has transpired this season, it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope the club can turn this around and expel all of the toxicity in and around Liverpool, but the Ibrahima Konaté situation simply reinforced that perspective for me
