With the injury to Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool need to be active in the transfer window for another attacker. Three players, including a Serie A star and a former Liverpool attacker, could be targets for the club.
With the breaking news that Ibrahima Konaté will not be signing a new contract at Liverpool, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes’ shopping list for the transfer window has just grown even longer, with Paul Joyce reporting that FSG's focus is set on addressing attacking requirements.
With Liverpool reportedly needing reinforcements at goalkeeper, full-back, centre half, multiple midfield roles, and in the wide attacking positions, do Liverpool also need to re-enter the market for another number 9, with Hugo Ekitike likely out for the entirety of the 2026/27 season?

In short, yes.
With the injury to Ekitike, as well as the fitness struggles for Alexander Isak, who only made 22 appearances across all competitions, the number 9 position has now become a genuine priority this summer.
But with Liverpool not currently employing any right wingers as I write this, we’re going to look at some cut-price centre forwards.
Dusan Vlahovic
Serie A - Lecce v Juventus - Stadio Via del mare, Lecce, Italy - May 9, 2026 Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic reacts REUTERS/Alessandro GarofaloThe current Juventus forward is expected to have plenty of options this summer, with multiple clubs looking at Vlahovic as an excellent free transfer opportunity. With a free transfer will come high wage demands from the Serbian striker who notched 15 goals across 35 appearances this season, including seven in 19 in the league.
Vlahovic is known for his explosive finishing, aerial presence, and physical hold-up play. Are these the attributes of Liverpool strikers who have succeeded in the past? No, is the answer, and in a time when Liverpool are questioning the managerial style of limited pressing from the front, Liverpool needs to think about contingency planning, so I wouldn’t go down the same road with Vlahovic that Liverpool did with Benteke under Rodgers.
Goncalo Ramos
UEFA Champions League - Final - Paris St Germain v Arsenal - Puskas Arena, Budapest, Hungary - May 30, 2026 Paris St Germain's Goncalo Ramos scores a penalty during the shoot-out REUTERS/Phil NobleAnother forward who would represent good value in the market, with the Portuguese striker being offered around clubs for around £25M. The 2025/26 season has been a disappointing one for the former Benfica man, with Ramos scoring 12 goals across 44 appearances, with only six of those coming in the league.
However, sometimes stats alone don’t tell the full story and we should judge a player on the eye test. Not something you’d normally do for a striker, but for a backup striker you can consider this from time to time.
What does Ramos offer that Liverpool do not have today? A striker who aggressively presses from the front and has the ability to drop deep to act as a playmaker and create space for wide players to take up goal-scoring positions.
Roberto Firmino is one of a kind, but the similarities are there. For this to work, Liverpool need goal-scoring wingers. And the club do not have any right wingers to start, so it’s difficult to properly assess Ramos without them.
Darwin Nunez
Yes, you read that correctly. Could a return for Darwin Nunez be on the cards this summer?
The Uruguayan has endured a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia, having been removed from the registered squad following Al Hilal’s signing of Karim Benzema. With Al Hilal paying a fixed fee of £46.2M to the Reds last summer, as well as Liverpool being able to write off another £15M they would have had to pay Benfica if Darwin played a few extra times, Hughes could look at this as a £60M loan profit for 12 months, and re-signing Darwin on lesser wages, with reports suggesting he could being available for free this summer.
The Uruguayan striker scored 9 goals in 22 appearances for Al Hilal, but could the workhorse, chaotic style, alongside the desire to prove a point work in favour of Liverpool?
There are quite a number of strikers we could investigate further, like Nicholas Jackson, Jonathan David, Mateta, Marmoush, and Guirassy, to name a few. Although there are questions about who will be brought in, reinforcements certainly need to be signed.
