After struggling to make the right-back position his own, Jeremie Frimpong could be set for a dramatic tactical switch.
Would you like to see Frimpong further up the pitch in a more attacking role?
Yes, helps with strikeforce
0%No! We need him in the RB position
0%Jeremie Frimpong’s Liverpool career may already be heading in a new direction. According to reports shared by Sky Sports News, the Dutch international is expected to be used further up the pitch after failing to fully convince as the club’s first-choice right-back during last season.
Maximise Frimpong’s Strengths
With new signing Victor Muñoz also capable of operating on the right-hand side, Liverpool could be preparing to maximise Frimpong’s greatest strengths rather than forcing him into a more traditional defensive role.
Frimpong has never been a conventional full-back. During his outstanding spell at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, he flourished as an attacking wing-back, regularly playing almost as a winger. His explosive pace, relentless energy and eye for goal made him one of Europe’s most dangerous wide players rather than simply a defender.

The 2024/25 campaign highlighted exactly why Liverpool were so keen to sign him. Across all competitions for Leverkusen, Frimpong registered five goals and 12 assists, while creating numerous chances from the right. According to FBref, he ranked among the Bundesliga’s elite full-backs for progressive carries, touches in the attacking penalty area and successful take-ons, statistics that underline his attacking instincts far more than his defensive qualities.
Those numbers mirror what Liverpool fans have already seen in flashes. When Frimpong is allowed to drive at defenders, overlap wide or arrive late into the box, he becomes a genuine match-winner.
However, being asked to defend large spaces as a traditional right-back in the Premier League has exposed areas of his game that have never been his biggest strengths.
In the 2025/26 season for Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong recorded 2 goals and 1 assist in the Premier League (with 5 total goal contributions across all competitions).

A move into a more advanced role could solve several problems for Liverpool. Whether deployed as a right winger, an attacking wing-back or even as part of a front three, Frimpong’s pace would stretch opposition defences and create more room for players operating centrally. It would also reduce the defensive burden that has occasionally left him looking vulnerable.
The arrival of Victor Muñoz provides Andoni Iraola with valuable tactical flexibility. If Muñoz offers greater defensive stability, Liverpool can afford to unleash Frimpong higher up the pitch, where his attacking numbers suggest he is at his most effective.
It remains to be seen whether the positional change becomes permanent, but the evidence from Germany is difficult to ignore. Frimpong was signed because of his attacking brilliance, not simply his ability to defend.
If Liverpool can recreate the role that made him one of Europe’s standout performers, they may yet unlock one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking players.
