Cody Gakpo’s double and Alexander Isak’s relentless movement partnered by an assist fueled a five-goal thriller, offering a tantalising glimpse into the future of Liverpool’s evolving attacking rotation with their international displays.

Liverpool fans were reminded of their attacking prowess after Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak both played crucial roles for the Netherlands and Sweden at the World Cup, and were key in their respective sides’ game.

The match between the two nations naturally drew extra interest from Anfield.

Two Liverpool forwards faced off: Gakpo for the Netherlands and Isak for Sweden, and both players had left their mark by the end of the game.

The Netherlands dominated, defeating Sweden 5-1. Gakpo scored twice in the second half, transforming a strong performance into a convincing victory.

Gakpo’s International Impact Continues

His tournament has once again underscored his significance for the Netherlands.

Often considered one of Liverpool’s most versatile attackers, Gakpo can play from the left, through the middle or as part of a fluid front line.

Against Sweden, his versatility was evident and his goals showcased two facets of his game.

The first demonstrated his ability to find space in dangerous areas and arrive at the right moment. The second highlighted his confidence and composure in the final third.

For Liverpool, this is the version of Gakpo they know and love.

His physical profile, technical skills and intelligence make him a difficult player to categorise.  He’s not just a winger; he can drift inside, link up with midfielders and attack the box.

Isak Impressing

The Swedes performance is another reminder of why Liverpool invested heavily in him. Despite the result, he continued to demonstrate why they did.

The striker joined the tournament after an injury-plagued season but shone brightly in Sweden’s opening victory over Tunisia. He scored and provided two assists in a 5-1 win.

Against the Netherlands, his key qualities were still evident. His movement, ability to stretch defenders and calmness on the ball make him one of the most naturally gifted forwards in international football.

For Liverpool, seeing Isak find his rhythm on the biggest stage is a major positive. A fully fit Isak will change the attack’s profile.

Author’s Verdict: A sign of things to come for a new look Liverpool forward line?

This is a positive sign for Liverpool’s new era. Liverpool’s forward line is entering a new chapter. There’s no single player who can replace what Salah provided. Instead, the Reds will need multiple attacking players to contribute.

Gakpo and Isak’s international performances are exactly what Liverpool wants to see. They offer different qualities. Gakpo brings versatility and creativity, while Isak brings movement, finishing and a constant threat in behind. Under Andoni Iraola,

Liverpool will need attackers who can press, rotate and create danger, and performances like these suggest the club already has important pieces in place.

The World Cup is still only beginning, but Liverpool’s forwards are already making a noise.
