Jérémy Jacquet arrived at Liverpool carrying a sizeable transfer fee and an even bigger reputation. Barely two months into his Anfield career, the 21-year-old could already be about to add a senior France international appearance to his CV.

Zidane’s Provisional Squad

According to L’Équipe, new France head coach Zinédine Zidane has included Jacquet in his provisional squad ahead of his first official selection, which will be announced on Friday 18th September.

A place on the preliminary list does not guarantee a call-up, but it confirms Jacquet is firmly on Zidane’s radar.

Liverpool Career So Far

For Liverpool fans, that should come as little surprise. Jacquet officially completed his move from Rennes in July after Liverpool had agreed the transfer in February.

Reports put the package at £55million plus £5million in potential add-ons, with the Reds beating strong competition from Chelsea for one of French football’s most highly-rated young defenders.

The transition to English football has been remarkably quick. Jacquet has started all four of Liverpool’s Premier League matches so far this season, accumulating 327 minutes. His latest appearance was the full 90 minutes in the goalless draw against Fulham on 12th September.

His first appearance at Anfield offered an early glimpse of why Liverpool invested so heavily. In the Reds’ final pre-season fixture against Como, Jacquet impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk and even marked his debut with a goal in a 2-0 victory.

Past Career

There is substance behind the hype, too. During the 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign, Jacquet won 75.5% of his aerial duels and completed 90.4% of his passes. Those numbers paint the picture of a modern centre-back: aggressive in the air, but comfortable enough in possession to build attacks from deep.

His journey has been impressively fast. A Rennes academy graduate, Jacquet made his senior debut in January 2024 before choosing a loan spell at Clermont Foot to accelerate his development. He later returned to establish himself at Rennes and arrived on Merseyside with 37 Ligue 1 appearances across three seasons.

He has also represented France at U21 level and was selected in the Team of the Tournament as France reached the 2024 European U19 Championship final.

All Eyes On Jacquet

Now Zidane is watching. Liverpool paid for potential, but Jacquet is beginning to look considerably closer to the finished article than many expected.

A first senior France call-up would be another significant step and perhaps the clearest indication yet that Liverpool have secured a defender capable of becoming a cornerstone at Anfield for years to come.
