Liverpool’s pursuit of the world’s brightest young talent has been in full swing this summer, and Samuel Martínez might be one of the most interesting additions yet.

Liverpool Win Signature Battle

Liverpool officially confirmed in July that they had agreed a deal to sign the highly-rated 17-year-old attacking midfielder from Colombian giants Atlético Nacional.

Martínez will remain in Colombia before joining Liverpool’s Academy ahead of the 2027/28 season, once he is eligible to make the international move.

But fresh details reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce, have offered a fascinating insight into just how fiercely contested his signature was.

Multi Club Interest

According to Pearce, Martínez attracted interest from around 20 clubs and ultimately found himself torn between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund. The decisive factor was reportedly a presentation from Liverpool’s global talent director Matt Newberry and his team, outlining the pathway they believe Martínez can follow on Merseyside.

That is significant. Dortmund have built an enviable reputation for giving elite teenagers a platform, yet Liverpool managed to convince Martínez that Kirkby represented the better route.

Previous reports underline just how big a recruitment coup this could prove to be. Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Chelsea and Bayern Munich were among the European heavyweights credited with an interest, while Sky Germany reported Dortmund had been well advanced in their own pursuit.

Modest Fee

The fee is relatively modest considering the competition. Reports have placed the deal at around £750,000 to £860,000, with Atlético Nacional retaining a sell-on clause.

So why the excitement? Martínez operates predominantly as an attacking midfielder and has already made his mark internationally.

Player Stats

He featured throughout Colombia’s victorious 2026 South American Under-17 Championship, registering three assists, including one in the 3-0 semi-final win over Brazil and another as Colombia dismantled Argentina 4-0 in the final.

Technically gifted, comfortable receiving possession in tight spaces and capable of operating as a No.10 or deeper midfielder, Martínez fits the profile of the modern, versatile creator.

Perhaps more important than the player himself, however, is what his decision says about Liverpool. Liverpool are increasingly attempting to identify elite talent before their valuations become astronomical.

Martínez choosing Liverpool despite having Dortmund and a host of European giants waiting in the wings suggests the club are not simply selling youngsters a dream they are selling them a pathway.
