Liverpool have suffered without Trent Alexander-Arnold in their first season without the English fullback, after Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong struggled with a number of injuries throughout the season. That is why the Reds should consider bringing in a new option this summer transfer window.

If Not Denzel Dumfries, Then Who Else?

With Fabrizio Romano again reporting Liverpool’s interest in signing another right back, it’s worth asking why the club may still look to strengthen the position this summer.

It remains unclear whether Conor Bradley or Jeremie Frimpong can fully replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, largely because both have struggled with injuries this season. Arne Slot recently confirmed Bradley is still “far away” from returning to outdoor training, increasing the likelihood Liverpool revisit the market.

Liverpool have been linked with Denzel Dumfries, but that move would raise more questions about long-term planning than excitement. So who else could Liverpool consider?

1. Givairo Read

The 19-year-old Feyenoord full back is one of Europe’s most promising young defenders. Quick, technically sharp and tactically flexible, Read can overlap effectively or operate as an inverted full back.

He possesses Frimpong’s explosive acceleration alongside Bradley’s ability to drive with the ball. However, with Liverpool already carrying two similar profiles, the question is whether Read is different enough to justify becoming a third option.

2. Michael Kayode

An intriguing option for Liverpool, with recent reported interest from Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old has impressed this season at Brentford, particularly with his defensive consistency. However, his attacking numbers are equally strong, with some of the best successful dribble statistics among full-backs across Europe’s major leagues.

Kayode also offers a Rory Delap-style long throw, something Liverpool have increasingly experimented with through Joe Gomez in recent weeks. With Arne Slot placing growing emphasis on set-piece importance, that profile could become even more valuable.

In a limited right-back market, Kayode is a player Liverpool should seriously consider.

3. Archie Gray

Many Liverpool fans continue to hope the club look to fill the Fabinho shape void in midfield, but it’s James Milner that Archie Gray would perfectly replace in this case.

This season Liverpool have used Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones at right back at various times, often attempting to force versatility from the current crop of central midfielders. But that flexibility cannot always be manufactured, in many cases it naturally exists within the player.

That is exactly what makes Archie Gray so interesting.

The Spurs youngster began his career at Leeds United as a right back, but has already shown he can operate comfortably across multiple midfield roles and defence. In a market lacking elite natural right-backs, Gray’s versatility becomes even more valuable.

He could provide Liverpool with immediate cover at right back while Bradley recovers, before eventually transitioning into a long-term midfield option if Bradley establishes himself.

There is also the homegrown factor. With Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones both linked with potential exits, Liverpool may soon need additional homegrown players for registration purposes. Gray would offer top-level ability, elite potential, and valuable squad registration flexibility for the 2026/27 campaign.
