It has been reported that the 17-year-old midfielder is undergoing medical tests on Merseyside ahead of his prospective move next summer.
Liverpool's bid for talented Colombian youngster Samuel Martinez looks to be gathering pace as news of impending medical tests broke. An image of Martinez with his agent Daniel Neumuller was posted on social media by Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra.
The first news of the transfer came out in May. The deal will be worth $1 million (ÂŁ740,000) plus a sell-on clause, according to German football journalist Florian Plettenberg.
It has been reported that he will sign a five-year contract once the transfer from Colombian side Atletico Nacional is confirmed.
However, due to FIFA rules the attacking midfielder will only be able to join Liverpool once he turns 18, which will be in April 2027.
Who is Samuel Martinez?
Martinez was born in Tuluá, Valle del Cauca in Colombia.
He had his breakthrough in the South American under-17 Championship, where he was instrumental in leading Colombia to glory. He started five of his country's six games and contributed three assists, including crucial contributions in both the semi-final and final.
"It's what I love, it's my passion, and the truth is I would give everything for football," Martinez told ESPN in April.
"Now I'm studying English because I think it's an important thing that I have to learn," Martinez said. "I study English three days a week in the afternoons."
"The rest of the time I spend training and when I rest I watch movies, but otherwise I'm a homebody."
Liverpool's strategy of targeting young players
The signing of Martinez would follow those of Dara Jikiemi and Michael Mulholland, from Scottish team Celtic and Northern Irish side Crusaders respectively. Jikiemi is the Soctland under-16 captain.
There has been an overhaul of the coaching structure of the Reds' youth teams over the last 12 months. Former Wales manager Rob Page is the under-21s team while Simon Wiles caoches the under-18s. Both joined in the summer of 2025.
Both are supported by Bafode Diakhaby who joined the club as youth development phase coach earlier this year. He is tasked with helping development of players even younger to break into the competitive youth squads at the club.
