Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool story has never quite moved beyond the feeling that something is about to happen. Now, with January creeping onto the horizon, that “something” could finally be a return to Italy.
Inter Milan Interest
Reports suggest Inter Milan are monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation at Anfield, with Italian outlet L’Interista suggesting the Nerazzurri could target Chiesa if they create room in their attacking department during the winter window.
Crucially, the report also claims Chiesa would be open to joining Inter despite his long association with Juventus. Nothing appears advanced at this stage, but the winger’s lack of football at Liverpool makes the speculation understandable.

Chiesa arrived from Juventus in the summer of 2024 having registered 32 goals and 23 assists in 131 appearances for the Turin giants. Liverpool were buying a proven Serie A attacker and Euro 2020 winner, but his opportunities on Merseyside have been remarkably limited.
His second Liverpool campaign offered flashes of what he could still provide. Chiesa made 26 Premier League appearances in 2025/26 but started only once, accumulating just 339 league minutes. Despite that tiny workload, he returned two goals and one assist. Across the Champions League he added another goal, while his two League Cup appearances produced two assists.
Those numbers perhaps sum up the frustration. Chiesa has rarely been given enough consecutive minutes to establish rhythm, yet there have been reminders of the direct, unpredictable attacker who once terrorised Serie A defences.
REUTERS/Phil NobleFitness Issues Continue
The situation has seemingly not improved under Andoni Iraola. As highlighted in the report, fitness issues disrupted Chiesa’s pre-season and he is yet to feature this season. If that continues towards January, questions over his future will inevitably grow louder.
Inter would certainly represent a fascinating destination. Chiesa knows Serie A inside out, can operate from either side and has previously played as a wing-back or closer to a central striker.
His final Juventus league campaign in 2023/24 produced nine goals and two assists from 33 Serie A appearances, demonstrating what he can offer when regularly involved.
Liverpool therefore have a decision approaching. Chiesa remains contracted until 2028, but at 28, sitting on the sidelines benefits nobody.
The affection for the Italian among Liverpool fans has never really disappeared. The minutes, however, have and unless that changes soon, January could finally bring the ending that has been threatened for some time.
