Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements could take them back to Serie A, with Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu emerging as a potential January target.

Reports in Italy claim Liverpool and Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs monitoring the 26-year-old, with a winter move now being considered. Football365, citing TuttoJuve, reports that both clubs are pursuing Kalulu, although there has been no official offer at this stage.

Juventus have little desire to lose him. GOAL reports that the Italian giants rejected enquiries during the summer and valued the Frenchman at around €50million, although the possibility of generating a substantial profit could become relevant if a major offer arrives. 

For Liverpool, the attraction isn’t difficult to understand. Kalulu is primarily a centre-back but has regularly operated at right-back and can cover across the defensive line.

Pace, recovery ability and comfort defending in wider areas make him the type of versatile defender who could give Andoni Iraola considerably more flexibility.

His availability is another major plus. Kalulu started all 37 of his Serie A appearances in 2025/26, playing 3,281 minutes while registering two goals and four assists. 

Those numbers underline just how important he has become in Turin. Kalulu came through Lyon’s academy before joining AC Milan in 2020. He went on to become part of Milan’s 2021/22 Serie A title-winning squad before moving to Juventus on loan in 2024. Juve subsequently made the transfer permanent, handing him a contract until June 2029. 

His development since then has been significant. After 29 Serie A appearances during his first campaign in Turin, he followed that with 37 starts last season. Opta’s figures give him 70 Serie A appearances for Juventus across his first two full seasons, scoring three goals and providing four assists. 

For Liverpool, Kalulu would represent something slightly different from simply buying another centre-half. He could provide competition centrally while also covering the right side when required, an increasingly valuable quality in a squad fighting across multiple competitions.

Juventus Obstacle 

The obstacle is Juventus. Luciano Spalletti clearly trusts Kalulu, his contract still has almost three years remaining, and the Italians have little reason to accept a cut-price deal.

Liverpool’s interest appears to be one to watch rather than an imminent transfer. But if Juventus’ stance changes in January, Kalulu’s combination of experience, durability and versatility could make him a particularly interesting name on the Reds’ defensive shortlist.
