Liverpool face Spurs in an all-Premier League encounter in the third round of the Carabao Cup, with both sides looking to right some wrongs following the weekend's league fixtures.

Today, Andoni Iraola spoke about whether he feels he has the squad to compete in all competitions, a number of key fitness updates, and the international future of club captain Virgil Van Dijk. Here is everything you need to know from the LFC head coach's press conference.

Andoni Iraola on the Importance of the League Cup

The Reds play their first game in the League Cup this season tomorrow night, and while it is considered by many as the least glamorous trophy that Liverpool are playing for this season, the club does have a well-established history with the competition, winning it a record 10 times.

Iraola was asked how he would rank this trophy compared to the other three:

"It's not about the ranking of the competitions. They are different. I am sure if you ask you prefer to win a Champions League and Premier League game but there's no guarantee that is you rest players you're going to win the next one. We want to win and play well and that's what we are going to try tomorrow."

Andoni Iraola on Squad Rotation

Often in these early cup games, sides use it as an opportunity to rotate their squad, handing out chances to fringe players who might not normally get the time on the pitch to impress, and LFC are no exception to that.

Iraola was quizzed on this, and explained why he believes he is still learning how much some of his players are able to play in a short space of time:

"It's the third game (in seven days) it's the worst scenario in terms of schedule, we haven't been lucky. After this one we have a little bit more before we play Bournemouth and you noticed the gap between Ipswich and Atletico and Atletico and Fulham. It's a big difference. We have to get used to it."

"You can put the same players in every game. The problem is there will be a moment they are really tired and there is more risk of injury. There are players who play every three days and have no issues, they can accept it and performances don't change too much."

"Then there are players where the risk is bigger and the performances are different. And we are in a position where I have to learn who is ready to play and who is ready to rest so their performance level doesn't drop. I had an idea with some of them, but for some of them it is new as they haven't played as many games before."

Andoni Iraola on the Size of his Squad

A follow-up to the previous question, the Reds boss was asked whether he felt his current squad size and quality were enough to be able to challenge and compete for all four trophies this season:

"I'm very happy with the squad, I value a lot the players we have. If we win games the squad looks fantastic, if we don't win then there are problems or whatever."

"We will see tomorrow players we haven't seen and I am looking forward to seeing them. They can help us and they haven't had the chance yet."

Andoni Iraola on Training Time

An unfortunate consequence of playing three games in little under a week is that the amount of time that the manager gets on the training pitch, implementing his ideas and philosophy into his side, becomes drastically reduced, and the aim turns to keeping players fresh and available, something that Iraola is still learning about his squad:

"We are in a territory where we have to talk to players, we have players who are experienced and have done it (playing every three days). With the younger ones and the ones coming from abroad, there are more question marks for them, for me and for everyone."

Andoni Iraola on Frustration after the Fulham draw:

One of the big things to come from this weekend's game was the frustration felt around the ground, online, and by many LFC fans across the world. Many thought that the days of watching boring and lifeless football were behind them with the appointment of Andoni Iraola.

But the Spanish coach was quick to point out that there will be bumps in the road during this process and that not every game is going to represent a step forward:

"I understand the frustration, as we were also frustrated. We were coming from two games of a step forward, then we had a step backwards. That happens in football."

"Probably the most frustrated as we wanted to continue the line and win the third game and give us a push moving forwards but it was a step backwards. We weren't good enough, especially offensively."

"We have to accept it in terms of there are going to be up and downs in this process, but we are clear where we want to go is more towards where we played against Atletico, the style of football we want. The key now is the consistency to perform like this."

Andoni Iraola on the Goalkeeping Department

With Alisson Becker's contract in its final year, Mamardashvili having a shaky first season on Merseyside, and the club investing heavily in young 18-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, the future order of the goalkeeping department at Liverpool looks a little unclear.

But Iraola pushed praise onto all of his goalkeepers and also confirmed who will start between the sticks in tomorrow's cup tie:

"Will I change the goalkeeper? Yes. Alisson is proven, he is playing very well. I rate Giorgi very highly, I know him from his years in Spain. We tried to sign him for Bournemouth before I came here, he is a very good goalkeeper."

"He is going to start tomorrow."

Iraola also provided an update on Joe Gomez, as he looks set to return to the squad tomorrow night following a nearly two-month absence:

"Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It's a matter of deciding how much he can play."

Andoni Iraola on the Midfield

A lot has been said about LFC's midfield this season. Many were in the camp that the Reds needed to sign a defensive midfielder during the summer window, but the club chose not to do so.

The reason for this desire to sign a DM is that Iraola's side has often found itself being too easy to get through in the middle of the pitch, as all of the club's current starting midfielders are more comfortable further forward, leaving huge gaps behind them.

When asked about his midfielder's success rate in ground duels against Fulham, this is what he had to say;

"Compared to previous games, we won the game a lot lower on the pitch. The only big chance we conceded was our goal kick we messed up, but we were recovering the ball very low, and when that happens you have to attack against 11 players, and that makes it more difficult."

"We need to recover the ball as high as possible because it makes the offensive side that much easier. We have situations to attack in one v one."

But he was also quick to highlight that it is not just the midfield responsible for winning the ball back, and that more needs to be done as a collective in order for the team to be successful in that area of the game:

"It's more than the midfield. When we have been good collectively, the midfielders have looked a lot better and recovered more balls. We are helping them more to win the duels. The ones up front do their job very well; then the midfielders look good."

"If we are allowing them to defend one-v-one all the time and we are not aggressive, then our defenders will also struggle. If the players ahead of you are doing the job, then the midfielders look better. It is more collective."

"That's the help we have to give to our defenders and midfielders so everyone looks better, looks smarter and in better positions."

Andoni Iraola on Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni

Two long-term injuries at Liverpool are Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, and with Iraola confirming a rough return timescale for another long-term injury in Hugo Ekitike last week, the press were eager to know about the progress of Bradley and Leoni:

"He is not close to training with the team. He is training alone, but he has started touching the ball. We want him back as soon as possible. He has a road a little bit ahead of him, and it is going to take some time."

"I think [Giovanni] Leoni is a little bit ahead of him."

Andoni Iraola on Virgil van Dijk's International Future

It was reported a short while ago that talks were set to take place between Virgil van Dijk and the new Netherlands head coach, Xavi, about the LFC captain's future with the national team.

And with an extended international break just around the corner, Iraola was asked whether he had any information on where Van Dijk's national team future may lie:

"I talked to Xavi and Virgil, but they were private conversations and not something I can say here. I know Xavi very well; he was here to watch the Atlético game."
