Liverpool could be preparing for another extraordinary move in the transfer market, with Barcelona midfielder Fermín López reportedly emerging as a potential €140 million target.

Behind the eye-watering price tag lies an even bigger question: could Liverpool really be contemplating life without Florian Wirtz?

According to Spanish publication El Nacional, Liverpool have been linked with an ambitious move for the 23-year-old Barcelona midfielder, with Andoni Iraola reportedly an admirer of the Spaniard.

The speculation comes amid claims that Wirtz is attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

However, there is currently no confirmation that Liverpool are actively negotiating for López or considering selling Wirtz.

Player Stats

López certainly possesses the qualities to excite supporters at Anfield. Energetic, technically gifted and capable of operating across attacking midfield, the Barcelona academy graduate combines creativity with an impressive eye for goal.

His numbers underline that reputation. According to Barcelona's official website, López registered 13 goals and 17 assists during the 2025/26 campaign, establishing himself as an important figure under Hansi Flick.

The Spanish international also enjoyed a remarkable summer in 2024, winning Olympic gold after finishing as the tournament's leading scorer with six goals.

No Talk of Wirtz Being Replaced

For Iraola, that combination of relentless movement, intelligent pressing and attacking instinct could make López an attractive addition. Yet the suggestion that he might replace Wirtz feels premature.

Liverpool invested heavily in the German international following his outstanding spell at Bayer Leverkusen, and although his Anfield career has yet to reach the heights many anticipated, abandoning the project so quickly would represent a significant decision.

Interestingly, the latest reports appear to contradict Iraola's own public stance.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Champions League encounter with LASK, the Spaniard defended Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, insisting both players retained his complete confidence.

"Bradley and Flo are players that I trust 100%," Iraola explained.

Barcelona Reluctant To Negotiate

That hardly sounds like a manager desperate to replace his German playmaker. There is also the considerable obstacle of Barcelona themselves. El Nacional acknowledges that the Catalan giants are reluctant to negotiate for López, potentially making any proposed deal extremely difficult.

For Liverpool, the reported interest is certainly intriguing. But whether this develops into a genuine transfer pursuit or simply becomes another ambitious rumour remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: €140 million would represent an extraordinary investment, particularly for a club still waiting to unlock Wirtz's full potential.
