Back in 2025, Liverpool were at a crossroads. With the need for more creativity in the squad, they had a choice to make: Florian Wirtz or Rayan Cherki. And there was reportedly one key factor that led to the Reds spending £116 million on the German instead of the cheaper Frenchman.

When Liverpool were looking for an addition in the attacking areas of the pitch, it was quickly established that they wanted someone who could operate in the "half spaces" and link play up from the middle of the pitch.
And two names stood out amongst all the others from across Europe, and those were Florian Wirtz and Rayan Cherki.
Not a lot separated the two when it came to the on-the-ball work, with both clearly possessing the technical quality to succeed at a very high level.
But the Reds went with Wirtz over Cherki, so what was the defining factor that led the recruitment team to spend £116 million on the German playmaker?
What Did Liverpool See In Florian Wirtz?
Despite the large amount of criticism that Wirtz is currently being directed towards him, when LFC announced his arrival, it was greeted with much fanfare from most, if not all, of the fanbase.
Many had seen what the Germans had been producing over a number of seasons for Bayer Leverkusen, both domestically and in Europe and believed that they had got their hands on a player who was ready to make the next step in his career and be talked about amongst the continent's elite.

And it isn't just running aimlessly; he has such a high sprint speed and the amount of turnovers he gets high up the pitch, he is perfect for a team that likes to press from the front, something that the Merseyside club have engraved into their DNA.
Even this season so far, you often see Wirtz alongside the central striker, usually Alexander Isak, before his recent injury, pressing from the front for the full 90 minutes.
How Does That Differ From Rayan Cherki?
Comparing Wirtz now to Rayan Cherki, the Frenchman has just as much, if not more, technical quality and skill than Florian Wirtz.
From a very young age, coming through Lyon's academy, he was considered a superb talent and possibly one of the best to ever come out of their highly successful youth system.
IMAGO / Propaganda Photo The way that the French international could manipulate the ball and make defenders look very average was at a level that very few had seen before, almost Lionel Messi-esque in that aspect of his game.
The issue that put off many top clubs from signing Rayan Cherki was his work rate and desire to help the team defend and win the ball back.
Liverpool were reportedly one of those teams, with Paul Joyce stating that Rayan Cherki was dismissed internally by LFC as he was deemed 'lazy', and instead the club went out and brought in Florian Wirtz in the summer of 2025.
As for Cherki, he would move to Premier League rivals Manchester City for a fee of £34 million in the same window as Wirtz moved to Anfield.
