In recent days, Anthony Gordon's move away from Newcastle United has finally come together with a blockbuster transfer to Barcelona.
This ends a multiple-year-long pursuit of Gordon by Liverpool, an interest that Paul Joyce confirmed today had continued even into this summer.
So, did Liverpool miss out?
Anthony Gordon's Player Profile
Anthony Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023. At the time, he was mostly known for his pace on the wing, but he quickly developed into a more well-rounded player at Newcastle.
The ex-Everton winger started very strongly (11 goals and 15 assists in his first full Premier League season for Newcastle), but the last two campaigns have seen a downturn - particularly in his goal-scoring form. In the 2024/25 season, Gordon scored six in 34 appearances, and in 2025/26 he scored six again, albeit in eight fewer PL appearances (and paired with a superb return of 10 goals in the Champions League).
So, if Gordon isn't a prolific goal-scorer, what else does he bring to the table?
The most obvious answer is intensity. Liverpool fans don't need statistics to tell them this, we've seen it first hand on multiple occasions - that infamous red card for a late challenge on Virgil van Dijk springs to mind!
It's not just the fact Gordon has intensity in buckets, but the fact Liverpool lack it, which would've made this aspect of his game particularly useful if he had signed for the Reds. That's not all to say he runs around like a headless chicken, though. Eddie Howe has developed Gordon into an intelligent presser during their shared time at Newcastle.
The former Evertonian is also known for his versatility, a trait often said to be highly valued by LFC's recruitment team. He's filled in at striker on multiple occasions for Howe's team this season.
Did Liverpool Miss Out?
With a rumoured price tag of 80 million euros (about 70 million pounds), perhaps it would be a stretch to say Liverpool have missed out on Gordon - especially when they're looking to replace Mohamed Salah. 12 goals over two seasons was never going to do that.
However, Gordon does have good traits. His intensity and versatility would've been useful, and the intangible aspect of him being a Liverpool fan and Scouser adds another layer of intrigue. But, ultimately, for such a high fee, I'm not sure anyone can describe Liverpool as having missed out.
