Liverpool will need to bolster their squad with more homegrown talent, so who could walk through the doors of the AXA training ground this summer?

As Liverpool enters the silly season of the summer transfer window, rumours of Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez, and Harvey Elliott exiting the club are closer to reality. The major concern for the Reds are that Jones and Gomez were two of the seven homegrown players in the 2025/26 season.

If these three named players were to exit Anfield this summer, Liverpool would be left with just six homegrown options: Woodman, Jaros, Bradley, Frimpong, Bajcetic, and McConnell.

With the latter two players not registering a minute last season, Liverpool will need to bolster their squad with more homegrown talent, so who could walk through the doors of the AXA training ground this summer?

As the minutes go by, this looks less and less possible. Gordon is subject to a £75M + move to the La Liga giants, Barcelona, with Bayern Munich also rumoured to have agreed personal terms with the Scouse winger. With Jones looking likely to leave this summer, it would be nice to have a Scouser in our team for the upcoming season.

This one looks more likely than Gordon. It’s fair to say Wharton had a quieter season this year for Crystal Palace. Wharton could be the replacement for Jones, but positionally and from a homegrown quota perspective, with the 22-year-old former Blackburn midfielder being heavily rumoured to join the 2024/25 champions. Does Wharton answer the number 6 question? I don’t believe so, but he could act as a top-quality deep-lying playmaker for Liverpool next season.

The future of Alisson Becker is still in the air. Vinny O’Connor of Sky Sports has reported in recent days that Liverpool have told the Brazilian stopper that they want him to remain at the club for the upcoming season.

Following the initial excitement of the positive news, is this just a bid to force the players’ hand to ask for his agreed move to Juventus?

With Mamardashvilli failing to fully capitalise on his opportunities this season, could Liverpool look at the Manchester City and England shot stopper as a potential long-term replacement for Alisson?

I, for one, still think Mamardashvilli needs time, but Trafford offers an excellent market opportunity, as well as a strategic opportunity to fulfil the homegrown quota.

4. Ethan Nwaneri

I’m personally a big fan of Nwaneri and think he could be an excellent long-term option and short-term backup for Liverpool. The Arsenal winger spent the second half of the season on loan at Marseille, scoring just two goals in nine appearances.

Upon his return to North London, Nwaneri will now find himself the fourth-choice right winger for the newly crowned Premier League Champions, behind Saka, Madueke, and now Max Dowman. Nwaneri’s stock won’t be as high now as it was a few years ago, but the potential to be a top-class player is still there.

5. Neco Williams

The Welsh full-back was recently named Nottingham Forest’s Player of the Season, which is a serious accolade when you consider how good Morgan Gibbs-White was this term.

The former Liverpool man has flourished in recent seasons at the City Ground, but would he fancy taking a trip back up the road to Anfield?

Williams is an interesting option, not just because of the player he’s become since leaving the Reds, but also his versatility of being able to operate as a right and left back, and with Andy Robertson departing as well as Frimpong and Bradley’s injury issues, Williams could find himself playing a lot of football for the Reds in 2026/27.
