Liverpool spent much of the summer searching for the right man to inherit one of the most daunting positions at Anfield. Yankuba Minteh didn’t arrive, but judging by the events of the last few months, this may be a transfer story that is far from finished.

 Minteh Speaks Publicly

Yankuba Minteh has spoken publicly about his failed summer move to Liverpool, insisting his attention is firmly on Brighton despite strong interest from the Reds.

Liverpool made two offers for the 22-year-old during the summer window. Sky Sports reported that Brighton rejected bids worth £50million and £60million, with the latter still falling short of the Seagulls’ valuation.

Speaking while attending Gambia’s AFCON qualifier against Somalia, Minteh refused to be drawn into speculation over what might happen next.

Return From Recovery

For Liverpool supporters, however, the most interesting part of the story could be what happens once Minteh is back on the pitch. The winger underwent surgery after suffering an injury during pre-season and is yet to feature this campaign. Asked about his recovery, his answer was encouragingly simple: “Very soon, very soon.”

Minteh has already demonstrated why Liverpool were interested. Predominantly operating from the right, his pace, direct running and willingness to attack defenders provide qualities Liverpool have been searching for following Mohamed Salah’s departure.

 Fabian Hürzeler Comments

Intriguingly, Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has hardly slammed the door shut either. Earlier this month, he suggested that if Brighton perform and Minteh shines individually, the winger could potentially “fulfil his dream in the next transfer window.”

There are also conflicting accounts of exactly why Liverpool stopped short of meeting Brighton’s demands.

Gambian journalist Foday Manneh told Sport Witness that Minteh’s injury became a significant concern late in negotiations, claiming Liverpool might otherwise have pushed their offer higher. That remains Manneh’s account rather than confirmation from Liverpool.

January Transfer Window

From an Anfield perspective, that makes the next few months fascinating. Minteh is saying all the right things about Brighton, as he should. But Liverpool’s interest was concrete, Brighton resisted two substantial offers and even Hürzeler has acknowledged the possibility of a future move.

If Minteh returns fit and immediately rediscovers his best form, don’t be surprised if the road between Brighton and Liverpool becomes busy again in January.
