Two and a half weeks ago, Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the Metropolitano, with United defender, Lisandro Martinez launching an attack on the Red Devils’ hierarchy, with words such as “I expect more from our technical director” (Jason Wilcox). Ironically, these comments were made at the Atletico Madrid stadium, Wanda Metropolitano, a club the Argentine would be very keen on joining, which would see him join national team mates, Cristian Romero and Giuliano Simeone.
Sources indicate a number of meetings took place in Madrid in and around United’s UCL fixture against Simeone’s side. United and Atletico held light talks regarding Pablo Barrios. However, it’s understood that discussions between Lisandro and those at Atletico have been taking place for some time regarding a potential move, and not only a few weeks ago when the Red Devils travelled to the Spanish capital. It’s also believed that Lisandro Martinez and Atletico Madrid have an agreement in principle on personal terms should a move in January or the Summer materialise. Note, the Argentine’s current terms at Old Trafford run until the summer of 2027, so Atletico could acquire the 28-year old for free.
The South American defender featured against Atletico Madrid for United this monthIt’s unlikely that Martinez will sign a new contract, or even trigger the further 12 month contract extension option, given the player’s words post-Atletico defeat in October alongside the fine that followed.
Nothing on the club side has advanced yet between the parties, but the player is keen on the move and fellow Argentine and Atletico gaffer, Diego Simeone is very keen on the player and could attempt a deal as soon as January 2027 should a deal be achievable with Manchester United.
Martinez received a red card today against Chelsea in the Premier League for United and is suspended for the Aston Villa fixture next weekend. The player is available for midweek selection against in-form AS Roma in the Champions League, however.
