Protégé Mainoo's top form prompts United to accelerate contract talks, aiming to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.
It's safe to say there is a serious buzz at the moment when it comes to Manchester United. Five wins from six, in the Champions League spots, and players enjoying their football again.
One player who is seriously enjoying himself is Kobbie Mainoo, who has already played more for Michael Carrick than he had all season before his appointment, having been put straight back into the side.
His current situation is a far cry from late December, when it was reported that the 20-year-old would look to leave on loan in the winter transfer window, with a view to getting game time ahead of the World Cup this summer.
Now, you cannot picture Mainoo anyway other than at Old Trafford. However, there is still a contract issue to be sorted out. As it stands, the midfielder will have 12 months remaining on his current deal in the summer.
So, it is something that needs to be sorted sooner rather than later. According to Graeme Bailey, United have scheduled a meeting to discuss a new contract.
Indeed, he reports that the player's representatives are scheduled to sit down with the club during the March international break, with both parties "looking to accelerate discussions" over his long term future.
As is mentioned in the article, Mainoo will be hoping that his representatives are the only ones there to discuss with the club, meaning he would be away on international duty with England. Earlier this month, national team manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that the midfielder, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were all "back in the international picture".
Around this time next month, England will play against Uruguay and Japan in friendlies at Wembley, the final games on home soil before the World Cup in North America this summer. Given this will be the final squad chosen before the final 26-man squad for the World Cup, it feels crucial for any player to be selected in this one.
It will be very interesting to see who, if any, and perhaps all three of Mainoo, Maguire and Shaw will be in the squad. None of the three have had a single call up under Tuchel so far, but again, he did mention that the door was open for them.
As for United, it is absolutely crucial that they manage to sort a new deal for their biggest prospect. It would be catastrophic if he was allowed to leave. Thank goodness that Ruben Amorim is no longer in charge.
