Michael Carrick’s side secured Champions League qualification despite VAR controversy, as Bruno Fernandes chased record-breaking assist numbers during a chaotic five-goal thriller in the Old Trafford finale.
Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest in their final home match of the season with a big 3-2 win for the club. The match saw Old Trafford bid farewell to Casemiro as well as celebrating Bruno Fernandes equalling the record for the most assists in a Premier League season.
United were the better team in large parts of the game, however, Forest managed to score two goals in the second half, catching out United's defence. Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson were the standouts for the away side, and it is no surprise the latter is of interest to United.
Despite making it slightly more difficult than it could have been, it was a positive afternoon for Michael Carrick and his side, as Carrick edges closer to signing a new contract to be the permanent manager. The team created many chances and could easily have had more than three goals.
Luke Shaw opened the scoring early on and United went into the break ahead. Forest quickly equalised after half time but United regained their advantage controversially just moments later. It was Matheus Cunha who scored the goal but a potential handball by Bryan Mbuemo resulted in a VAR check.

At first look, the handball seemed certain, and even Cunha resisted the urge to dance in front of the crowd. But after a lengthy VAR check, the referee decided to award the goal for United, much to the shock of many viewers.
In particular, Gary Neville was sure of the handball whilst on commentary duty for Sky Sports.
"Honestly, that is ridiculous," he said. "The VAR has been clear: the player has handballed it. He looked it for three minutes and the referee has looked at it for another minute.
"I can't believe what I have just seen. That was handball. I don't know what to say."
Although United fans get frustrated with Gary Neville at times, the referee's allowing the goal to stand did come as a surprise to lots of people, and it is understandable why many Forest fans were frustrated.
A positive end to United's home campaign
Given today's result, United have now picked up more points at home this season than they won home and away last season. The 24/25 campaign was a turbulent time for the club but this season has brought more stability and consistency. Since Carrick has took charge, the noise has quietened down and United have cruised to Champions League qualification.
As usual, United's standout performer today was their captain Bruno Fernandes. Despite an array of missed chances from United's attack, Fernandes equalled the Premier League assist record with his 20th of the season. A brilliantly fizzed pass across the box was finished by Mbuemo for United's third of the afternoon. With one game remaining against Brighton next week, United's captain will be eyeing a record-breaking achievement.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford was as special as ever as it said goodbye to one of its cult heroes. After four years at the club, Casemiro bids farewell and the United faithful gave him a memorable send-off. He will leave a big hole in United's midfield, which they can hopefully fill this summer with some top signings.
With Casemiro departing, a midfielder is top of the list for the club this summer. Today could have been seen as an audition for Elliot Anderson, who is rumoured to be United's number one choice. With interest growing from both Manchester sides, Anderson will have to choose between red or blue, but after a brilliant performance today with two assists, United should be doing everything they can to secure his services.
