Casemiro's aerial prowess and Benjamin Šeško's finish secured Manchester United a vital win over Brentford. Could Lammens be the signing of the season?
Michael Carrick had a few injuries to deal with as Manchester United hosted Brentford at Old Trafford in a pivotal clash for Champions League places.
The tie started with United in firm control, and after not too long, Casemiro rose at the back post to head his side in front in a fashion the Reds have become used to this campaign.
With the home side a goal up, Brentford's Igor Thiago came close on a number of occasions, although it did not take long for the Reds to respond, as Benjamin Šeško finished off a Bruno Fernandes pass to make it 2-0 before the break.
In the second half, Brentford and United continued to open up their opportunities for chances, but it took until the 90th minute for the away side to secure their first goal, through a long-range effort from Mathias Jensen.
However, Carrick's resolute defence was able to hold out an onslaught from Brentford to secure a much-needed three points. Below are five things learned from the game.
#1 – Aerial presence reigns king at Old Trafford
So many of United's goals this season have been Casemiro headers, and his opening goal on Monday evening was the epitome of how United have become so efficient at set piees.
With the Brazilian rising at the back post, the delivery came from Fernandes, finding Harry Maguire on the edge of the area, with Brentford unable to deal with the pure aerial power of the Reds.
Replacing him will ne hard this summer.
#2 – Amad needs to find his shooting boots
With Matheus Cunha unavailable due to injury, Amad was the man to fill on the left flank, and the Ivorian was handed plenty of chances.
Having a early shot on goal deflected just wide, Amad was handed multiple chances to score in the first half, although his only successful finish came from the player being a few feet offside.
It was not his night, and he was taken off at half-time. There's plenty to come for him, but he may need pre-season to reset.
#3 – Heaven pushing for a starting spot
If any United fan was asked who the best cente-back duo at the club is, Maguire and LIsandro Martínez would be the almost unanimous answer – although Ahden heaven may have somrtihn to say abotu this.
The English younster has filled in due to injury across two periods this season, before Rúben Amorim was sacked and following Martínez's three-game ban, and on both occasions, he has been brilliant.
Heading into next season, he will be under serious consideration to be one of United's starting defensive pair next season.
#4 – Lammens the hero once again
Senne Lammens is becoming such a hero at Old Trafford, that it's become almost routine to watch the young Belgian make great saves and continues his calm and composed presnce.
For the most part, it feels like the only goals he concedes are worldies or otherwise impossible shots to save, and he is laying himself roots for a possibly long and world-class career at Old Trafford.
For £18 million, he may well be the signing of the season.
#5 – Two points left until Champions League returns
With the three points in the bag and the club now 11 points above sixth-place in the league table, the club need just two more points to secure a top-five spot.
Champions League will be back at Old Trafford next campaign, and with that, a whole other selling point and budget for the sumemr window. Watch this space at Old Trafford.
