Ex-Manchester United player Owen Hargreaves has recently highlighted Senne Lammens as the club's signing of the season after his brilliant and crucial performances this season.

After a successful summer last year, can Man United go all the way next season?!

It is absolutely no secret that last season was an absolute disaster. After finishing 15th in the Premier League, everybody knew that the summer transfer window was going to be crucial in dictating the trajectory of the club for the forseeable future.

One of Manchester United's biggest issues was the goalkeeper. With almost all of the fanbase giving up on both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir after constant poor performances, the new goalkeeper had to be a hit.

Lammens was a Deadline Day signing for the club, after a disastrous start to the new season where we saw multiple mistakes from both United goalkeepers, the club went into panic mode and pulled the trigger on the deal for an unknown young Belgian.

Despite the incredible amount of pressure that was put onto the shoulders of young Senne Lammens, he has stayed headstrong throughout the season and been a focal point of United's Champions League qualification.

It was clear from the off that he was going to be a great signing as in just his second game for the club, he was tasked with facing the Anfield crowd, in which he made some great saves and contributed to a historic win.

The attack also got a complete makeover last summer, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko entering the fray, yet despite their abundance of goals, many would still crown Lammens as the missing piece to United's success.

Hargreaves on Lammens

In a recent video from TNT Sport, including multiple pundits, Owen Hargreaves gave his reasoning as to why he believes Lammens deserves the most praise, despite the success of the attack.

"I’ll tell you who's probably been the best signing of all of them: Senne Lammens. What did he cost? Not a lot, so he's been value for money.

"I think United looked at it and thought, 'what gets us up the table and gets us into the Champions League places?' It's not a new midfield player or a goalkeeper, it's goals.

"So they added Cunha and Mbeumo, guys with Premier League experience who can get you 20-odd goals, and United are third right now, so I think that's been proven correct.

"But I do think if they hadn't sorted the goalkeeper out, they wouldn't be in the top four."

Ally McCoist shared similar views to Hargreaves, adding his thoughts on Man United number 31.

"If you look at United defensively, they had no confidence at all in what was behind them.

"All of a sudden, they have someone who they do have confidence in, and I just think that makes such a big difference."

Is Lammens actually the best signing this season?

It is fair to say that last summer's transfer window was one of the club's best windows in a very long time, with every signing being a hit both on the pitch and amongst fans. But out of the new boys, who has been the best?

At the beginning of the season, there was one clear front runner. While Cunha and Benjamin Sesko struggling to find consistent form and goals, Bryan Mbeumo became arguably the teams most crucial player, and won the League's Player of the Month.

However, the other two attackers soon found their rhythm. Matheus Cunha now has nine goals and two assists for the season, including an unreal winner at the Emirates Stadium. Not his best output season, but he has proven to fans that he is much more than just numbers.

As for Sesko, despite a slow start to the season, his numbers skyrocketed after Michael Carrick was appointed interim manager. Scoring seven goals in just 13 matches, with most of those appearances being off the bench, he has racked up 12 goals for the year. Again, nothing too incredible, but he now seems adapted to the league.

Overall, it is definitely a close call between the four, but in my opinion, I have to side with Hargreaves and give the title 'signing of the season' to Senne Lammens.
