Manchester United are among the Premier League sides eyeing a move for Sporting CP's Maxi Araujo

Manchester United's left-back situation

Manchester United's summer transfer plans are being finalised as Michael Carrick's side approaches the end of the season. They have just two games to play after the 0-0 draw against Sunderland.

Defensive midfield will be the priority for director of football Jason Wilcox, with Casemiro already confirmed to be leaving at the end of the season. Manuel Ugarte's potential departure could force United to sign more than one high-profile midfielder.

This will restrict funds across the rest of the pitch, with United still looking at goalkeepers, central defenders, wingers and forwards.

Left-back appears to be another area of focus for United's recruitment team, despite Luke Shaw's form for the majority of this season. The England international has started every Premier League game this campaign - something he has never done before this year.

Patrick Dorgu's form as a left-winger could be the reason behind United's left-back interest. The Young Dane's future may lay in attack should Michael Carrick be appointed as the permanent head coach.

United eye Sporting's Araujo

The Red Devils will not be able to afford spending too much on a left-back, with so many other positions on the wishlist, so looking for a cheaper option will be crucial.

Portuguese outlet A Bola have reported that United - along with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur - have held "exploratory talks" with the representatives of Maxi Araujo.

Araujo is a versatile footballer who has played as a left-back, left-wing-back, left-winger, central midfielder and attacking midfielder. This season, Araujo has played 35 games as a left-back, five as a left-wing-back, and two as a left-winger, according to TransferMarkt

Atletico Madrid are believed to be winning the race for the Uruguayan, which could drive the price too high for United.

Sporting CP signed Araujo for just £11.5 million in 2024, but reports are suggesting they could ask for a fee as high as £70 million.

United's young left-backs

With the Champions League next season, it is important for United to have strength in depth across the pitch. At left-back, this is even more crucial due to Luke Shaw's injury record over recent years.

Should United stay clear of Araujo, they may ask Dorgu to fill in for Shaw when necessary, and look to promote one of the talented young left-backs already at Old Trafford.

Harry Amass will be pushing for first-team minutes after a promising loan at Sheffield Wednesday. He joined Norwich on another loan in January, but has not played due to an injury.

Diego Leon will also be looking for senior football next season. He spent the 2025/26 season with the under-21s, and will be hoping he can step up next campaign.

Godwill Kukonki has also played on the left side of defence for the 21s, while starting their for the 18s in their FA Youth Cup final run.
