A new era begins in Helsinki as a depleted Manchester United squad, featuring fresh signings, faces Wrexham, while injury concerns loom over several key stars and emerging young talents.
Manchester United will kick off their 2026 pre-season tour on Saturday afternoon as they face Championship club Wrexham at Helsingin olympiastadion in Helsinki, Finland.
Having finished third in last season's Premier League campaign, the club appointed their former midfielder as head coach after he won the club 12 out of 17 games during the second half of the campaign as interim boss.
United will not have many of their star names for the opening few pre-season fixtures due to the world cup, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martínez still in the USA ahead of the final few fixtures.
Those such as Bruno Fernandes and Senne Lammens exited the competition recently, but will be given around three weeks off for rest and recovery before rejoining the club later this month.
Some of United's key players, such as Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, as well as new signing Andrey Santos, have been in training since last week, when pre-season preparations first started.
Below is the latest on all fitness and injury problems ahead of the tie against Wrexham.
Manuel Ugarte
What happened: Midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered an ACL injury during Uruguay's 1-0 World Cup loss against Spain.
What's been said: United have confirmed that the player has undergone successful surgery and will begin a nine-month rehabilitation programme.
Expected return date: N/A
Benjamin Šeško
What happened: Striker Benjamin Šeško missed United's last three fixtures of the season due to aggravating a shin problem in a win over Liverpool, and has since been resting and recovering due to no World Cup action.
What's been said: United have confirmed that he has not travelled with the squad to face Wrexham, and that he will remain at Carrington to undergo a treatment plan to get back to full fitness.
Expected return date: N/A
Matthijs de Ligt
What happened: Matthijs de Ligt played every minute of United's first 13 league games last season, but didn't appear for the rest of the campaign due to a back injury.
What's been said: De Ligt recently shared an Instagram update of him undergoing some rehabilitation work, and the club have stated he's expected to return in the early stages of next season.
Expected return date: N/A
JJ Gabriel
What happened: 15-year-old JJ Gabriel is United's new Academy star and is expected to be involved with the first team during pre-season games.
What's been said: Despite excitement that an unofficial first-team debut could be handed to the player against Wrexham, his father has confirmed that Gabriel will not be involved against Wrexham due to an extended break handed by the club.
Expected return date: Gabriel could be available to face Rosenborg on Friday, 24 July.
Karl Darlow
What happened: New signing Karl Darlow has not travelled with United's squad to face Wrexham, with Tom Heaton, Radek Vitek, and Dermot Mee the trio that headed to Finland.
What's been said: United have confirmed that Darlow has not travelled as he is in the final stages of recovering from a procedure that he had at the end of last season.
Expected return date: N/A
Who else is out, and will new signings play?
It's expected that one of United's three new signings, Santos, will be in the squad and feature against Wrexham.
However, as Belgium played until the quarter-finals of the World Cup, the new arrival from Aston Villa, Youri Tielemans, will head on holiday and return to his new squad in early August.
Fernandes, Lammens, Mainoo, Martínez, Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Matheus Cunha, Amad, Tyler Fletcher, and Altay Bayındır will return to training over the next few weeks as their World Cup rest periods end.
