Manchester United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for an initial £48 million, with a further £2 million in performance-related add-ons. Chelsea have also retained a 10% sell-on clause as part of the deal.

Santos becomes United's first signing under new manager Michael Carrick and is expected to be one of as many as three midfield arrivals this summer.

Meanwhile, United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. The Belgium international, who recently captained his country to the World Cup quarter-finals, is scheduled to undergo a medical on Tuesday ahead of completing the move.

However, United's proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been brought to a halt. Although the clubs had agreed an initial £35 million transfer fee, medical examinations reportedly uncovered unexpected issues, leaving the deal on hold.

After his official announcement on Monday afternoon, Santos conducted his first interview with United's media team and spoke about several interesting topics.

One of those involved the new boss Carrick, who became the new head coach after impressing during an interim period last season.

The former Chelsea midfielder stated that his 30-minute meeting with Carrick before he signed amazed him and that he is looking forward to working with the boss.

“I know him very well. He’s a top, top coach,” Santos replied when asked about Carrick.

“I did a meeting with him, and I remember it because it was around 30 minutes and, when I finished my meeting with him, I said: ‘Wow, he’s amazing.’

“Now, I meet with him [in person] and I’m so excited to work with him.”

Santos, at only 22 years of age, is a midfielder who has room to grow, and Carrick was one of the best in that position during his playing days at Old Trafford.

It has also been revealed that Santos started training with United's squad this week and he will likely be available to face Wrexham in the club's first pre-season fixture on the weekend.

The Saturday evening kick-off will be Carrick's side's first run-out. Players who competed at the World Cup will not be available to play as they get a proper rest before their return later in pre-season. 

Kobbie Mainoo is still competing at the tournament while Bruno Fernandes was only recently knocked out with Portugal. Manuel Ugarte suffered a long-term injury this summer too.

That means that Santos may be the only senior midfielder available for the start of pre-season, and he will be looking forward to showing United fans what he can offer ahead of the new campaign.
