The center-back displayed elite distribution and composure during a dominant international victory, earning praise for his 97% passing accuracy as he prepares for a crucial Premier League return.

Do Man Utd have enough quality centre-back options?More Videos

After five games of the 2026-27 Premier League campaign, club football paused as the first of three mid-season international breaks began towards the end of September.

After the merger of the September and October breaks into a single international window, the break will have lasted three weeks by the time Manchester United's Premier League season resumes when they host Tottenham Hotspur on the 10th of October, when nations will have played four international fixtures rather than the traditional two.

While Michael Carrick's side has had a mixed start to the new season, several Manchester United players are still representing their countries during the break.

Despite Karl Darlow, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, and Benjamin Šeško all having to withdraw from international duty, United still have eleven first-team players representing their respective nations.

Argentine media reacts to Lisandro Martínez performance

Having featured in Argentina's 4-0 win over Bolivia on the 1st of October, Lisandro Martínez was once again handed a start by Lionel Scaloni, enjoying a successful outing as Argentina emerged with a 7-0 victory over Burkina Faso on October 3rd, as the side gears up for Lionel Messi's farewell international fixture against Benin on the 7th.

The 28-year-old started alongside Cristian Romero in the heart of the defence, with the former Ajax centre-back playing just the first half of the match, as Argentina stormed to a 5-0 lead at half time.

It was a relatively straightforward outing for the centre-back, with the United centre-back not needing to make a single tackle or foul, but it was the defenders 97% passing accuracy that impressed the Argentinian media.

La Pagina Millonaria pointed out his impressive passing star, handing him a 6/10 rating while also saying, "Much the same as Cuti, although he was under less defensive pressure than the captain. His touches came whilst building play from the back and, like his partner, he was precise. He was substituted at half-time.”

El Destape Web was also very impressed, handing him a 7/10 rating, saying, “He was once again solid in defence and was hardly called upon at the back. He played for just one half.”

La Voz also added, “Another player who was on the pitch long enough to add another win to his record, but he didn’t face any difficulties.”

What is Martínez's future at Man Utd?

It is unfortunate that Lisandro Martínez has been plagued by injuries since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2022, suffering eight different injuries that have kept him out of over 100 games for United.

The 28-year-old's contract in Manchester expires at the end of this season, although the club do have the option to extend the Argentine's time at Old Trafford by an extra year.

While his on-the-ball quality is immense, the 28-year-old's defensive quality has at times been questioned, and at 5 feet 9 inches, he has sometimes struggled against aerial threats in such a physical league.

Judging by the club's recent transfer strategy, next summer's business will likely focus heavily on defence, with United in need of quality depth across the back line, and the club will certainly be weighing its options ahead of another crucial summer window.
