Following a milestone victory, the United star discusses tactical evolution and newfound responsibility as the squad adapts to life under Eva Olid’s transformative leadership style.
After a turbulent start to the Women's Super League, Manchester United have finally found form under new boss Eva Olid, with their latest performance being a 1-0 win over Liverpool in their 250th game since their formation in 2018.
An early goal from Julia Zigiotti Olme's tenacious pressing caught the Liverpool defence asleep as the Swedish midfielder lifted her effort over the retreating Khiara Keating handing United the lead with only six minutes on the clock.
For the remainder of the game, both sides had chances, but a combination of defensive heroics and last ditch defending saw the game come to a close with United securing all three points.
A series of reflex saves, high claims and late blocks from Phallon Tullis Joyce and her defenders kept a clean sheet, whilst Keating managed to keep any other United chances at bay with quick reactions.
The win brings United to sixth in the league table ahead of all other games of match week five, with United now undefeated in their last five outings in all competitions.
Toone Speaks On Quick Changes
The game saw back to back starts for Ella Toone who unfortunately missed out on a call up with the Lionesses in the coming international break after a blip in form. The 27-year-old spoke out after the game about her stance in the side and adapting to the new manager in such a short time
Speaking with BBC Sport after the game, Toone highlighted the tactical changes from Eva Olid and the momentum shift in the team.
"We know that Liverpool like to man-to-man press and press high and press with intent and we had to match that and go beyond that. It was good that we came out the blocks and managed to get that goal early.
"The first two games weren't how we wanted them to go obviously, we're a team who wants to put on performances and get three points every time we step out onto the pitch. I think we've built on the performances against Arsenal and the cup games have helped get that confidence back scoring goals.
"We know its a project and we know we've gotta work hard and we've gotta keep pushing every game. This league is really difficult and anyone can beat anyone."
United's first two league games saw them concede a combined seven goals with a shaken side struggling to adapt with a new manager and many major departures, but recent weeks have seen a huge change in momentum with the new arrivals settling in, and Olid's side showing more confidence within their performances.
Toone's Individual Shift In Responsibility
As the only remaining player of the original Manchester United Women's side in 2018, Toone has consistently been the creative spark within the side. However the arrival of Eva Olid has sparked some conversation over Toone's use in the squad.
Toone explained her change of role in the squad. She stated, "I think under Marc [Skinner] I had a lot of freedom. Same with Eva, she wants to play really attacking football it suits me. I like to run in behind a lot but she wants me in the pockets. She knows I can get on the ball in the pockets, if we can find the players in the spaces that's where she wants me to be.
"It's been a really difficult week. Not the news that any footballer wants, but I've got good people around me the manager has played me today so that shows the belief that she has. I've got good teammates who give me that confidence but its about me now.
"I've gotta keep working hard and se it as fuel to come back even better and the main thing for me is that I step out onto the pitch and enjoy my football. That's when I play my best so a lot of work but I'll use this international break to make sure that I'm reset, my mind is focussed and then ill go again."
The morale within the squad seems to be high and Toone can utilise the coming international break to put in the individual work and keep her place in the starting eleven and eventually re-claim her place in the Lionesses squad.
