Despite failing to score in a frustrating draw, the winger tormented defenders with his trademark pace and dribbling, signaling a promising return to form under Michael Carrick.
Manchester United were denied victory by a late Everton equaliser as the sides drew 2-2 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. Michael Carrick kept the same XI that beat Ipswich Town 5-2, while Bruno Fernandes nearly opened the scoring when his effort struck the crossbar.
United were the stronger side for much of the first half, creating the better chances as Everton looked dangerous on the counter. However, neither team could find a breakthrough before the interval.
The deadlock was broken just 53 seconds after the restart when Bryan Mbeumo raced forward and calmly finished. Everton responded through Tyrique George, who levelled with a powerful strike, but Benjamin Šeško quickly restored United's lead from Luke Shaw's delivery.
United looked set to claim all three points until Everton struck again in stoppage time. Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced an excellent finish to make it 2-2, leaving United frustrated after twice surrendering their advantage.
Ashley Young on Rashford's performance
While Marcus Rashford is yet to score or assist for Manchester United since making his dramatic return to his boyhood club over the summer, the Englishman has looked very dangerous off the left wing, having started against both Ipswich and Everton.
Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Ashley Young believes that Rashford looks to be back to his best for United, despite the side's disappointing 2-2 draw against Everton.
"As a winger, you want your full-back to overlap at times but sometimes you want them just to leave you.
"Give you the ball and let Marcus Rashford do his thing and you know when he's this good and he's got the confidence, he runs at people and he's a terror."
While Merlin Rohl is not a natural right-back, you can only beat what's put in front of you, and Rashford did that time and time again.
The 28-year-old completed three successful dribbles, was fouled twice, and won six duels; despite creating just one chance and not taking a shot, these performances are certainly promising signs for Rashford this season.
Rashford is crucial for this Man Utd side
It looked basically guaranteed that Marcus Rashford's time at Manchester United would come to an end over the summer after Barcelona opted not to sign the Englishman permanently through a £26 million option to buy included in his loan deal despite performing well in Spain.
The winger scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions last season, and signing that output for £26 million would have been a bargain. Instead, Barcelona opted to spend just under £100 million to sign Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi.
Reports emerged towards the end of last season that Michael Carrick was targeting a left winger in the summer, and it would have come as a shock that that man turned out to be Rashford, but he has been immense since his return to Old Trafford.
Rashford provides a completely different attacking profile to Carrick's forward line, always looking to beat his man and drive to the byline, while Bryan Mbeumo on the other flank looks to cut in and create something, as seen by his goal against Everton.
While Matheus Cunha performed well off the left last season, he has played the majority of his career as a centre-forward, playing more as a false nine who drops slightly deeper and gets more involved in the link up.
Benjamin Šeško's aerial prowess and physicality means that Carrick has several different attacking avenues which could prove to be very valuable over the course of the season.
