Can Man Utd win the Premier League under Michael Carrick? More Videos

Roundtable understands that Manchester United have held club-to-club talks with Newcastle United for English left-back Lewis Hall.

It is understood that there is yet to be a significant breakthrough, but United remain interested in Lewis Hall after planning talks with his club earlier this month.

It has been widely reported that Lewis Hall is not for sale this summer, as Newcastle United have already lost Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.

Roundtable have previously reported that Lewis Hall is the first choice in the left-back position.

Manchester United acknowledge that it is a deal to pull off financially, despite Newcastle United's recent change in head coach after Eddie Howe left the club.

What Lewis Hall would bring to Man Utd

With Manchester United set to return to the Champions League, Michael Carrick will be tested with the difficulties of rotating his starting lineup regularly for the first time since he became head coach.

In most positions, United seem to have at least two options to compete for game time, although they remain light at left-back.

Harry Amass and Luke Shaw have shared the minutes in that position in pre-season, with the former starting and impressing against Leeds United on Wednesday evening.

Reports earlier in the summer suggested Amass was likely to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer alongside Toby Collyer, Dan Gore and Radek Vitek. The latter has since moved to Middlesbrough for £7 million, plus another £7 million in add-ons.

Whether Amass stays or goes, Hall would raise the level at Manchester United, given he has Premier League experience and Amass does not.

The former Chelsea youngster began life as a central midfielder before becoming a left-back in their Under-21s side.

Man Utd should push for another midfielder

Signing Hall would be smart business for Manchester United, and he would fill a hole in the squad, but another remains in central midfield.

As it stands, Michael Carrick's midfield options are Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount. Tyler and Jack Fletcher may also be considered, but they lack experience in the top flight.

If Manchester United want to compete on four fronts next term, it would be sensible to sign another midfielder before the window closes at the start of September. This would provide Michael Carrick with solid depth heading into a big season for him and his squad.

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have impressed since their moves from Chelsea and Aston Villa, with the former starting all of Manchester United's pre-season matches. Tielemans has featured more recently against Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds United, and is likely to play against Rúben Amorim's AC Milan this weekend.

Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martínez and Marcus Rashford are also in line to return to the pitch on Saturday, having joined Michael Carrick's squad later than most due to their World Cup runs.

After AC Milan, United have just one week before their Premier League opener against Hull City away from home.
