Securing Champions League qualification and restoring a winning culture at Carrington propelled the former midfielder to a permanent deal following his dominant sixteen-game audition at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The former United midfielder only took over the squad on a five-month contract following Rúben Amorim's sacking in January. But having won 11 of 16 games since then, he's been offered the role full-time.
Following wins over the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Chelsea, Carrick has been handed a two-year contract, with the club retaining the option to extend this by a further season.
United are aiming to lift the Premier League title by June 2028, which is when Carrick's deal would initially be set to expire.
Wilcox addresses Carrick appointment
Carrick was appointed by United after the club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, and club CEO, Omar Berrada, recommended to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe that the Englishman was best positioned to continue at the club.
While the likes of Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glanser, and others were all also considered for the position, Carrick's stellar work made sure he was the man in the driving seat.
Speaking to club media amid the appointment, Wilcox also stressed that Carrick's part in helping the squad qualify for the Champions League was a key factor in the decision.
“Michael has thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue leading our men’s team," Wilcox said.
"In the time he has been doing the role, we have seen positive results on the pitch, but more than that, an approach which aligns with the club’s values, traditions and history.
“Michael’s achievements in leading the club back to the Champions League should not be understated.
"He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture at Carrington and in the dressing room, which we are continuing to build.”
Carrick eyeing the major honours
Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club, United have lifted two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Europa League, but have failed to mount any significant push for the two biggest honours – the Premier League and Champions League.
However, amid his appointment, Carrick has stressed that he knows his task is to bring the very best tropies back to Old Trafford for the first time since 2013.
“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United," the United boss explained.
“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.
“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
