Despite injuries, an academy coach declares Shea Lacey's elite technical skills make him ready for immediate Manchester United first-team impact.
Should Carrick give Lacey minutes this season?
Shea Lacey’s introduction to senior football at Manchester United has been slightly turbulent, despite the huge promise he carries.
The talented young Englishman has excelled for the club’s U18s and U21s this season, though his momentum has occasionally been disrupted by a couple of injuries.
He made his senior debut under Rúben Amorim late last year and delivered some impressive cameo appearances against Aston Villa and Brighton in the FA Cup, although his outing in the latter ended in a red card.
After serving a one-match suspension, Lacey suffered another injury, which has limited his involvement under Michael Carrick so far, and United’s reduced fixture list this season has further restricted his minutes.
However, Roundtable understands that Lacey is now back in full training with the senior squad, and could certinaly look to make an impact before the campaign ends.
'Elite' Lacey is first-team ready
Despite the lack of minutes and injuries that Lacey has suffered from during the last six months, many at United are still incredibly excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for the talented young winger.
None more so than United's current U21s boss Adam Lawrence, who is well versed with Lacey's level of talent. Speaking to MailSport, the United coach gave insight into what life is like for Lacey at Carrington.
|So, day to day, Shea will train with the first team, basically follow their programme and then obviously be topped up with Under 21 games when he needs to be playing," Lawrence explained when discussing how Lacey balances first-team and the Academy.
Continuing, Lawrence was also quick to point out that although the 18-year-old tends to develop physically a little slower than his peers, his "elite" technical level is proof that he is already ready for first-team football.
"Shea is quite a unique case that you don't see a lot of within the game because he's always had a higher level, like an elite technical level," Lawrence continued.
"He's been a later developer physically. So it's not always an easy case with that type of player because they can do things with the ball, which are, without getting too carried away, like first-team level, genuinely.
"But then, in terms of the physicality and the physical side of the game, they need more time and patience.
"So again, this period has been really critical for Shea in terms of being consistently with the first team."
Lacey can save United money this summer
In a summer where United will be dropping as much as £200 million on new midfielders, a new left-winger, and possibly a new left-back, Lacey could be one to answer a much-needed call at Old Trafford.
United let go of five first-team forwards last summer, but only brought in three to replcae them, and with European football set to return to Old Trafford next season, United need high quality depth.
While Bryan Mbeumo, Mathues Cunha, Benjamin Šeško, and Amad are all incredibly capable forwrads, four players for three positoins is simply not enough depth. While the club want a new left-winger, they need a few more attackers.
Joshua Zirkzee's future is up in the air, and depending on how the club see his future at United, he may still leave Old Trafford.
If Lacey can make the complete jump to first-team football next season, he could save United millions in transfer fees by nailing down a spot in United's senior attacking squad list.
