Frustrated by failed pursuits for Lewis Hall and Alejandro Balde, the Red Devils have identified Bournemouth’s rising star as the high-stakes solution to their defensive injury woes.
Manchester United explored several options to strengthen their left-back depth during the summer transfer window but ultimately decided to leave the position unchanged. While the club was keen to add competition in the role, United were reluctant to make a permanent signing that could interfere with their plans for future transfer windows.
Lewis Hall emerged as the club’s preferred target, with United holding discussions with Newcastle United over a potential deal. However, Newcastle made it clear they had no intention of selling the defender. Hall remains United’s top choice, and the club could revisit a move for him when the transfer window reopens next summer.
Racing Santander defender Jorge Salinas was another option United considered. The player was available for a reported £13.7 million due to his release clause, but the club decided not to trigger it and instead explored signing a left-back on loan.
Alejandro Balde was one potential loan option, with United reportedly discussing a deal with the Barcelona defender’s representative, Jorge Mendes. However, Barcelona were unwilling to sanction a loan, while Balde himself was keen to remain at Camp Nou.
With their preferred options unavailable, United ultimately chose to wait rather than commit to a deal that could complicate Hall's potential move next summer.
Man Utd closely monitoring Adrien Truffert
On the 11th of September, Newcastle United announced that Lewis Hall had signed a new long-term contract, extending his stay in the North East by two years and tying him to the club until 2031.
As a result, Manchester United have started looking elsewhere for their next left-back addition, with Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert reportedly becoming United's main target at left-back.
As reported by CaughtOffside, United are closely monitoring the 24-year-old's situation at Bournemouth, as his impressive performances since joining the Premier League side last season have attracted the Reds' interest.
INEOS have clearly been opting to sign stars with Premier League experience, so Truffert would be an ideal addition and could be the man to be the long-term replacement for Luke Shaw
The deal for Truffert won't be cheap
Much like Brighton, Bournemouth have a stellar recent track record of developing multiple top talents who have since been sold to bigger clubs for a big profit.
Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, and Antonie Semenyo are recent examples of this, while current stars like Rayan, Alex Scott, and Eli Junior Kroupi all look set for major moves in the near future.
Having attracted high fees for recent players, Bournemouth have reportedly valued the Frenchman at around £60 million, as the club looks to avoid losing too many key squad players.
United clearly need a new long-term left-back to rival and eventually replace Luke Shaw, and they will need to act fast in pursuing the Frenchman if they step up their interest in the 24-year-old.
