The left-back role at Manchester United has been cursed by bad luck in recent years. Since joining from Southampton in 2014 under Louis van Gaal, Luke Shaw has spent much of his Old Trafford career as the club’s first-choice left-back.

However, despite consistently proving his quality whenever available, recurring injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress.

The most devastating blow came in 2015 when Shaw suffered a horrific double leg fracture, breaking both his tibia and fibula. The injury ruled him out for 64 matches and marked a major setback in his career.

Seeking greater depth and competition in the position, former manager Erik ten Hag brought in Tyrell Malacia. Yet the Dutch defender has also struggled with injury problems since arriving in Manchester, preventing him from establishing himself as a dependable option on the left side of defence.

This season, though, Shaw has finally enjoyed an extended spell of fitness. With Manchester United playing just once a week, the England international has started every available Premier League fixture, becoming only the fifth outfield player in the club’s history to achieve such an impressive milestone.

As Luke Shaw enters the final year of his contract, United are linked with a number of left-back targets, with an "unbelievable" option emerging recently.

While midfield has to be the focus this summer, left-back should also be high on the priority list, with Tyrell Malacia expected to leave the club this summer.

In comes Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson, who, after having a fairly poor season by his standards in the 2025/26 campaign, could be looking for a new challenge after Marco Silva brought his five-year managerial tenure to an end.

 As reported by Sky Sports, United are looking at the 28-year-old as a replacement for Luke Shaw, after performing well in the two seasons before the 2025/26 season, also being named Fulham Player of the Season after the 2023/24 campaign.

Robinson has been hailed as "unbelievable" by Marco Silva in the past, and is seen as a reliable option who could be tempted by a Champions League campaign at United next season.

It remains to be seen whether United's interest is enough for them to submit an official bid or not, but, like many deals this summer, clubs will most likely have to wait until the conclusion of the World Cup to properly get their transfer windows underway.

United are also reportedly keeping tabs on Newcastle United's Lewis Hall, with the 21-year-old seen as a younger option with considerable potential, but would naturally cost considerably more than Robinson.

It has been reported that the club have held talks with Hall's representatives for the last three days amid a possible move for the left-back.

With all the talk about left-backs this summer, it begs the question as to what Harry Amass' role at Manchester United will be next season, with Luke Shaw expected to not start as many games next season.

Amass was very impressive in the first half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, before earning a loan spell at Norwich in January. Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, though, he suffered a hamstring injury almost immediately after joining, bringing an end to his season.

Ideally, United need someone that will challenge Shaw for a starting place in the side, and be able to deputise for the 30-year-old, something that might still be too soon for Amass.

The 19-year-old needs to prove his fitness after such a serious injury, and another loan spell looks to be the best option for Amass' development next season.
