Old Trafford witnessed a stunning resurgence as Kobbie Mainoo dominated the midfield and Bruno Fernandes netted a clinical hat-trick to dismantle Ipswich after a shaky opening.
Manchester United embarked on their second Premier League fixture of the 2026/27 campaign, welcoming Ipswich Town to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Having suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City last weekend, United looked to right their wrongs and were fast out of the blocks, with good chances falling to the likes of Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford in the opening 20 minutes.
However, a little before 30 minutes, it was the visitors who took the lead through Leif Davis, following poor defending from Luke Shaw. Thankfully, after a slip from Marcelino Núñez, Matheus Cunha led a counter that was finished by Bruno Fernandes.
In the second half, United showed much more intent, with Harry Maguire seeing a shot going wide deflected into Ipswich's net. Then, not too long later, Fernandes grabbed his second, scoring from the spot.
Then, just as a captain does, he caught onto a deflected Bryan Mbeumo shot, controlled it, and finished in style for his hat-trick. With United cruising, Fernandes then found Mbeumo through on goal, who lofted a finish over the goalkeeper to make it 5-1.
What a brilliant reaction and performance from United.

Lammens – 6/10
Made some great saves and not too much to be done for Ipswich's opening goal. Calm as always.
Dalot – 6/10
Starting over Mazraoui, Dalot got forward well and was involved in plenty of attacking sequences, although he was susceptible in defence.
Maguire – 6/10
Not lots to report, but solid overall. Lucky to not have a handball called on him for United's second.
Martínez – 6.5/10
Looked to make forward passes well, getting back to rhythm. Improved well as the game went on. Gave the ball away right at the end for Ipswich's second, although the weather will have something to do with that.
Shaw – 3/10
Got completely burnt for Ipswich's opening goal, a new left-back is needed.
Mainoo – 9/10
Back in the starting XI, Mainoo looked strong and sharp on the ball. Sublime performance with some awesome dribbling.
Tielemans – 5/10
Lost the ball more than you'd want in the first half, but looked better once United upped the tempo.
Fernandes – 10/10
The United captain had a lot to make up for this weekend, and boy did he do so. Three great finishes, captain's performance. AND he got an assist...
Rashford – 6/10
Making his first start for United in 626 days, Rashford looked bright. Although his final ball didn't quite find its target, there were plenty of positive signs.
Cunha – 6/10
After a poor performance last week, he was more involved, and his assist for Fernandes was inch-perfect. Improvement.
Mbeumo – 6/10
Unlike pre-season, his finishing boots looked very off it, although his lofted goal at the end was a well-deserved prize for hard work.
