As internal tensions boil over at Real Madrid, Manchester United are poised to capitalise on a shock bust-up and lure defensive powerhouse Aurélien Tchouaméni to Old Trafford.
Last summer’s transfer window marked a major overhaul of Manchester United’s attack, as the club completely reshaped its forward line.
Following a disappointing campaign in front of goal, United brought in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško to revitalise the squad. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Rasmus Højlund, and Jadon Sancho all moved on, either permanently or on loan.
The changes have paid off immediately. The new attacking trio has combined for 26 goals, helping United become the Premier League’s third-highest scoring team this season with 63 goals, behind only Manchester City and Arsenal.
With the 2025/26 season approaching its final stages and Champions League football secured for next season, focus is already beginning to shift toward the upcoming summer transfer window. Midfield reinforcements are understood to be the club’s main priority.
Aurélien Tchouaméni could become available
It's fair to say that Real Madrid are in a full-blown crisis, with the tension and discontent within the squad seemingly at an all-time high. Tensions boiled over recently, with reports of a fight between teammates Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde.
It is alleged that after prolonged arguments, the French midfielder hit his Uruguayan teammate, who fell and hit his head, and had to go to hospital to get stitches for a cut to the head.
While the hospital visit has been confirmed, Valverde released a statement saying that he accidentally hit his head on a table, and needed a routine hospital visit to address it.
While the details are not yet fully known, the tension within the squad is very real, and, as reported by Football Insider, United could take advantage of the situation by making a move for Tchouaméni.
Former Man Utd chief scout Mick Brown told the outlet, “I’m told Man United have been looking at Tchouameni, he’s just had this bust-up with Valverde so they’ll be keeping an eye on the fallout of that.
“It won’t put them off of a move, that’s for sure, because if every club dropped their interest in a player who had an issue in the dressing room, there’d be no targets left.
“These things happen in football; it’s a lot more common than you would think. It’s just not usually as public as it seems to have been at Real Madrid.
“So Man United could look to take advantage of that if there’s any suggestion he could leave, because these issues don’t seem to be going away.”
As reported by Tyrone Marshall, Man Utd reporter for Manchester Evening News, United are 'ready' to attempt a move for the highly rated midfielder if he becomes available
Man Utd may be priced out of a move
As Manchester United prepare for life without Casemiro, they may once again turn to Real Madrid to provide their next defensive midfielder once again, who himself was brought in just months before the Brazilian left Madrid to be his long-term successor.
Football Insider reports that Real Madrid hold the key to the Frenchman's future, with any potential departure depending on the club's willingness to sell. Despite sources indicating that the 26-year-old is unlikely to depart from the Bernabeu this summer, the recent reported bust up may have drastically changed things behind the scenes.
Despite the potential willingness to open talks for the midfielder, United may ultimately be priced out of a move, as a fee could reach £100 million. The Frenchman signed in 2023 for just under £70m, and his stocks have certainly risen since making the switch from Ligue 1 to La Liga.
With United looking to make a marquee midfield signing, INEOS should look within the Premier League to maximise the chances of success.
INEOS' focus on signing established Premier League stars has certainly paid off this season, as seen by the success of both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson have both emerged as greatly talented midfielders, while the likes of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães, Carlos Baleba and João Gomes could all be available this summer.
