Chelsea's managerial pursuit falters, potentially clearing the path for Manchester United to secure Julian Nagelsmann as their next coach.
Originally brought in to steady the ship until the end of the season, Michael Carrick's instant success at Manchester United has propelled him into being a serious contender to be the side's head coach going into next season.
After Ruben Amorim's disappointing end to life at Manchester United, who was dismissed after an explosive post-match press conference at the turn of the year, INEOS opted to take a chance with Carrick, whose last job was at Middlesbrough.
INEOS' main goal going into this season was for the club to qualify for European football next season, but not many could have imagined United qualifying for the Champions League after their poor start to the season.
Across his first twelve matches, Carrick has led his United side to eight wins, two draws, and two defeats, lifting the club to third in the Premier League, and giving the side an eight-point cushion to sixth-placed Brighton with a game in hand, giving United a great chance to qualify for Europe's elite competition.
Man Utd receive Julian Nagelsmann boost
It is no secret that INEOS are taking this next managerial appointment very seriously, closely looking at any and all potential managerial candidates, as they look to identify the right person to lead the club forward.
Julian Nagelsmann, who is the current manager of the Germany national team, is touted to land a Premier League job as early as this summer, despite signing an extension with Germany past this summer's World Cup tournament.
After sacking Liam Rosenior, Chelsea also find themselves in the market for a manager, and have already been linked with the highly rated German manager. According to FootballInsider however, Chelsea have doubts about Nagelsmann and would prefer to get a deal done before the World Cup gets underway.
Pete O'Rourke, the outlet's transfer correspondent said, "BlueCo will move on to their fifth manager since they’ve taken over, which is staggering really.
“There’s been long-term interest in Julian Nagelsmann, the Germany coach, but I hear he’s got reservations about taking the job.
“And again, I don’t think Chelsea will be willing to wait until after the World Cup to bring in a new manager, they want to do it quickly.
“There’ll be a number of candidates that the club are going to look at and evaluate, because they need to get this managerial appointment right.
“They can’t keep chopping and changing managers because it’ll just mean they keep falling behind their big rivals.”
The problem with the managerial market this summer
The outlet has also previously reported that the German manager is keen on the Old Trafford job and would be open to taking over after the conclusion of the World Cup.
Their chances are boosted by the fact that Christopher Vivell, United's head of recruitment has worked closely alongside Nagelsmann in the past, when the pair were together at RB Leipzig.
While there is no doubt that the 38-year-old manager will be in high demand when he decides to move on from managing the German national team, there is one huge problem with United trying to hire any manager who will be at the World Cup in the summer.
Germany will be expected to make a deep run into the tournament, with the tournament concluding on the 19th July. The problem comes from the fact that should United decide to hire a manager who will be at the World Cup, then the new head coach will have virtually no time with the squad before the start of pre-season, and will be under prepared for a crucial campaign, where United will be expected to make deep runs in the domestic competitions, as well as preparing for a Champions League campaign.
United's 2025 pre-season started on the 19th July, and less than one month later, were playing their opening fixture of the season against Arsenal on the 17th of August, highlighting how little time the likes of Nagelsmann will have to prepare, and will most definitely be playing catch up.
