Michael Carrick saw Cunha as an impact sub, not a winger. The Brazilian's stunning performances proved his manager wrong, forcing a tactical rethink.

Should Manchester United sign a left-winger in the summer?

Matheus Cunha has had a fine debut season for Manchester United, netting eight times and assisting twice since his £62.5 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

The Brazilian international has scored important goals for Michael Carrick's side since his arrival, including a winner against Chelsea, an incredible strike from range against title-challenging Arsenal and his first United goal in a comprehensive win over Brighton.

United had a rebuild of their frontline over the summer, whilst Ruben Amorim was still in charge, so the Red Devils have ended up with two natural number 10's, in Cunha and the irreplaceable captain Bruno Fernandes.

When Carrick first arrived as interim head coach, Cunha could only find himself on the bench with the ex-United midfielder preferring Patrick Dorgu over the Brazilian, surprising considering the form Cunha was in as he scored an important goal against Leeds, the final game for Amorin.

Cunha couldn't play left wing, thought Carrick

Cunha, speaking to Owen Hargreaves and TNT Sports, has said that at the start of Carrick's tenure, he was going to be used as an impact sub of sorts, which he did actually thrive in.

In his first two substitute appearances for Carrick, he assisted against City and scored against Arsenal, but Cunha wanted to start.

He said that Carrick told him "we need a winger, and we will play Patrick [Dorgu] there because he can hold the width". Despite this, Dorgu came off injured against Arsenal with a hamstring injury and has yet to return, which allowed Cunha to prove Carrick wrong by flourishing in this new, wider position.

Cunha was not best pleased with Carrick's decision when he was told he was to be backup to Dorgu. In his interview, he said: “I said no. You can put me there. I will do all of those things”, which he proved to Carrick and to the rest of the Premier League

Is Cunha a better wide player than Dorgu?

It is very difficult to compare these two players as they have such different attribute sets.

With Cunha, you know exactly what you're getting: the great one-on-one skills and confidence to take on his man, proving he has the shooting ability when he cuts inside.

However, Dorgu brings a lot more explosiveness to United and with him playing at wing-back for most of his United career, it gives him strength in tracking back and helping on the counter.

Ultimately, it feels like it would be an unwise decision by the United board if they spent so much money on Cunha, who is approaching his prime years and decide to use him as an impact sub, especially with him proving himself as a very capable player out wide.
