Manchester United have handed Marcus Rashford a new shirt number after his loan moves with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Nobody expected Marcus Rashford to return to Manchester United after being cast away from the first-team squad while Rúben Amorim was in charge.

However, today (Saturday, 15 August) Rashford is likely to take the field for United against AC Milan, who are coached by Rúben Amorim.

You could not write it could you?

He starts on the bench, with Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu named in the starting XI. It seems Cunha will lead the line and Dorgu will play from the left flank.

AC Milan are United's final pre-season opponents before their return to competitive action against Hull City next weekend.

Marcus Rashford's new Man Utd number

Against AC Milan, Rashford has been handed the No.9 shirt, although that could still change before the start of the season.

With Matheus Cunha wearing No.10, Rashford was always going to have to change, but his previous Manchester United numbers have also been taken up.

Bryan Mbeumo is currently donning the No.19 shirt, which Rashford wore before he switched to No.10, while Jack Fletcher holds the No.39 shirt – Rashford's first shirt number at Old Trafford.

Tyrone Marshall has confirmed that Rashford's number could change before the beginning of the season, but it is expected to be confirmed next week.

Rasmus Hojlund was the former owner of the No.9 shirt, but he joined Napoli permanently this summer after they qualified for the Champions League while he was on loan, which triggered his buy-out obligation.

Rashford improves Man Utd

While he was not expected to return, Marcus Rashford could be an excellent addition to Michael Carrick's first-team squad.

Manchester United have been linked with left-wingers for the majority of the summer, but having Rashford back in the fold negates the need to spend over £50 million on a new addition. That money could now go towards a new left-back or a third central midfield signing.

Rashford also brings Champions League experience, which could be crucial for United, given they have not played in the competition since 2023/24 under Erik ten Hag.

The England international will likely be hungry to impress against Amorim on Saturday afternoon, as will Kobbie Mainoo, who has also been named on the bench after returning to the squad after the World Cup. Lisandro Martínez has also been named amongst the substitutes.
