A year on from joining Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Matheus Cunha has grown to become one of United's most influential figures not only on the pitch but off it as well.

The 27-year-old has fast become a fan favourite since joining United, where he has proven time and again to be a vital asset to the squad, grabbing games by the scruff of the neck, often deciding them on his own.

In this time, the Brazilian has also grown to become a big personality in the dressing room, settling in nicely after his big move, where, in a recent interview, he has largely credited the smoothness of his transition into United to one of his teamates in particular.

Cunha Reveals He Tried To Convince Casemiro To Stay

In a recent interview with AS, the United number ten was asked if he had made any efforts to try and convince Casemiro to continue with the Red Devil's for one more season, to which he replied by saying: “All the Manchester United fans and I did!

"Casemiro is one of our club’s great players, and he would undoubtedly help us a lot if he stayed here."

Cunha proceeded to credit his international teammate in making him feel welcome after first joining United in the summer of 2025.

“He was one of the players who welcomed me with open arms when I arrived, and I’m very grateful to him for that. If I could, I’d make him stay with us for another year. I wish him every success in the future.”

Cunha then went on to reflect further on his time at the club so far, as well as offering insight into the Brazilian's aims for next season.

“I think it has been a positive season for the club. We have managed to get United back into the Champions League, and we hope to continue on this upward trajectory next season. We have a lot of confidence in our work.”

“We’re going to work hard to do justice to the shirt we wear and to the club’s rich history. That’s our promise to the fans. We want next season to be a season of triumphs.”

How Will United Cope With The Loss Of Casemiro?

Despite the wishes of Matheus Cunha and the large majority of the United fan base, Casemiro has stood firm on his decision to part ways with the club following the end of the 25/26 season, with United now set with the task of replacing the Brazilian.

United have already appeared to be heavily active in this summer market, despite it only opening its doors recently, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson reportedly set to become United's first signing of the summer as United look to overhaul their midfield following the departure of Casemiro.

Other targets, such as West Ham United's Matheus Fernandes, have also seemingly been sounded out by United, with the club facing potential competition from Real Madrid and PSG for the Portuguese's signature this summer, as well as what is looking like a tough negotiating period with West Ham, who are seeking £80 million for the midfielder.

United are still set to be monitoring other midfield targets, but with the club also needing to invest in other areas of the squad, it remains unclear how big a budget United will have to spend on a potential third midfielder this summer.
