The Moroccan defender’s potential return offers a vital defensive boost as Michael Carrick’s struggling side seeks to snap a five-match winless streak in a high-stakes Elland Road showdown.

Pressure mounts in Michael Carrick as he looks to take on Leeds United More Videos

Manchester United have been a shadow of themselves last season, going from a third-place finish to one win in six Premier League games under Michael Carrick.

His side are winless in their last five games in all competitions, with the most recent league performance being a poor 1-1 draw with a struggling Tottenham Hotspur side. United look for redemption on Sunday away to Leeds United in what is expected to be another tough bout.

The increased volume of games has taken its toll on the squad, with injuries already playing their part this season. The likes of Benjamin Sesko, Noussair Mazraoui, and Luke Shaw have all had setbacks this season, keeping them out of the squad.

Ahead of Sunday's clash with Leeds, Carrick has delivered a positive update on Mazraoui's condition, with questions over who United will resort to as the preferred right back.

Carrick Confirms Mazraoui could return vs Leeds

After resorting to Leny Yoro to slot in at right back against Spurs and Diogo Dalot preferred against Atletico Madrid, the right-back position is clearly still in the air within the squad.

With Mazraoui's absence seemingly coming to an end, Carrick confirmed the Moroccan's status. He stated: "Hopefully, we've got Nous back involved.

"He's done a little bit of training, so he'll be back around the group, which is a good step in the right direction for us."

Defensive inconsistency has already proven to be an issue, with United already having a range of centre-back duos this season. Typically, Dalot has remained an ever-present in the squad, playing at least 30 games per season since 2021/22.

Meanwhile, Mazraoui has been a versatile option, operating as a fullback for United. His availability against Leeds could be vital, with Shaw's availability inconsistent.

Should United Invest In The Defence In January

Fans were screaming out for a left-back during the summer, with Luke Shaw's injury history being a clear reminder of the importance of squad depth.

After failing to bring in a new profile, Manchester United have resorted to 20-year-old Ayden Heaven to start in an away Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid in a less-preferred position, leaving United vulnerable.

Whilst Mazraoui's return to the squad is a major boost, adding experience and quality as a wide defender, there are still major concerns over the future of the squad.

For now, United are desperate for a win. It will not come easy against Leeds. Daniel Farke's side have only lost once in the Premier League this season as they sit in seventh place in the Premier League ahead of Saturday's games.
