As Manchester City faces potential expulsion over FFP breaches, Quinton Fortune urges United to bypass Erling Haaland for a versatile teenage starlet to rebuild the Old Trafford squad.
Manchester City's dominance over the past 20 years or so has come into major disrepute after an Independent Commission found the club guilty of FFP breaches between 2009 and 2018, when they enjoyed major success.
Despite City already lodging an appeal and remaining adamant that they are completely innocent of any and all infractions levied against them, it is becoming increasingly likely that this appeal will ultimately fail, and City's guilty verdict will remain.
While the punishment is still unknown, it's safe to say the club will not get off lightly and could face severe repercussions, ranging from a hefty fine and a major points deduction to a lengthy transfer ban or even expulsion from the Premier League.
If the club were removed from the Premier League, most of its first-team squad would likely leave the Etihad Stadium to find another club where they could continue competing at the top level.
Surprise Man City star named as No.1 Man Utd target
If so, former Manchester United player Quinton Fortune has urged INEOS to raid Manchester City for their five best players, but he named a surprise player as who should be the club's number one target.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, he said, "Players coming directly from City, I don’t know how United fans would take that!
“But they have wonderful players. Number one I’d say Nico O’Reilly at left-back is brilliant, he can cover center-back and midfield, similar to John O’Shea.
“Rayan Cherki is fantastic too, what he can do with the ball is so special. Phil Foden is a die-hard City fan, so that wouldn’t happen.
“Marc Guehi at centre-back would be a great addition, and Elliot Anderson would be nice as well, look at what he cost them.
“And if there are any leftovers, I’ll take Erling Haaland! I can’t believe I mentioned all those names before Haaland! There might well be quite a few options there.”
How Man Utd have been affected by City's guilty verdict
Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United at the end of the 2012-13 season, the club has seen a major downturn in form, failing to replicate the legendary Scottish manager's success.
During the period when Man City were found guilty of FFP breaches, the club won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, and one Community Shield, while United finished second behind their rivals in both 2011/12 and 2017/18.
Recent reports indicate that United are assessing the financial consequences of City's rule-breaking, including being denied Champions League qualification and the aforementioned league titles by their rivals during that period.
For example, City finished fourth, ahead of United, in the 2015/16 Premier League campaign on goal difference, meaning Manchester United didn't qualify for elite European football, though they did win the Europa League the following season.
